Sunnats of Azaan and Iqaamah - Part Ten

Written by

How to call out the azaan:

If one is calling out the azaan of Fajr, then one would recite the following twice after saying (Hayya ‘alal Falaah):

Salaah is better than sleep.

Hazrat Abu Mahdhoorah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion, he said to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam): “O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), teach me the sunnah method of calling out the azaan.” …. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “If it is the azaan of Fajr, then add the words الصلاة خير من النوم (assalaatu khairum minan naum) twice (after حي على الفلاح hayya alal falaah).”

How to call out the azaan:

اَللهُ أَكْبَرْ اللهُ أَكْبَرْ

Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest.

Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest.

Note: The letter ر (raa) in the first أكبر (akbar) can be read with a sukoon without joining it to the word ألله (Allah), or with a fathah by joining it to the word الله (Allah). To read it in any other way will be against the Sunnah.

Aadaab at the time of calling out the azaan:

7. Call out the azaan in a loud voice.

Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin Zaid (radhiallahu ‘anhu) reports … “I then informed Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) about the dream I had seen (and the manner of calling out the azaan that I was taught in the dream). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Certainly it is a true dream Insha Allah. Stand up with Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and tell him the words of azaan you had heard in your dream, so that he may call out the azaan with these words, since his voice is louder than yours.”

Virtues of the Muazzin

• Those who call out the azaan have been described in the Hadith as being from the best servants of Allah Ta‘ala.

Hazrat ibn Abi Aufaa (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Certainly the best servants of Allah Ta‘ala are those who discharge their ‘ibaadaat upon observing the rising and setting of the sun, the moon, the stars and the (length of the) shadows for the remembrance of Allah Ta‘ala (i.e. they fulfill their ‘ibaadaat in its proper time according to the command of Allah Ta‘ala while keeping an account of time through observing the sun, moon, stars and the length of the shadows as explained in the Ahaadith. Hence, the muazzin accordingly calls out the azaan of each salaah upon its proper time.)

Sunnats of Azaan and Iqaamah – Part One

Azaan is among the salient features of the Deen of Islam. Islam has afforded great honor to all those who call out the azaan, inviting people towards salaah. On the day of Qiyaamah, people will admire those who used to call out the azaan in the world on account of their esteemed position and lofty status in the Hereafter. Numerous Ahaadith highlight the great virtues and immense rewards in store for those who call out the azaan.

Virtues of the Muazzin

• The position of the Mu’azzin on the day of Qiyaamah.

Hazrat Mu‘aawiyah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Verily the mu’azzins will have the “longest necks” on the Day of Qiyaamah.”

In this Hadith, the literal meaning is not intended. Rather, the meaning of having “long necks” is that they will occupy distinct positions of honor.
