In the same year (the year that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) invited the Banu Zuhal bin Shaibaan tribe to Islam), Abul Haysar, Anas bin Raafi’, came to Makkah Mukarramah with a few of his young friends in search of an ally among the Quraish against the Khazraj tribe. Among his young friends was a man by the name of Iyaas bin Mu’aaz.

When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) heard of their arrival, he approached them and said, “I will present before you something that is better than what you have come for.” Hearing this, Abul Haysar and his friends enquired, “What is that?”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “I am the Rasul of Allah. Allah Ta‘ala has commissioned me to summon His servants towards Him and to worship Him without ascribing any partner unto Him. Allah Ta‘ala has also revealed a kitaab to me.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then recited a few verses of the Qur’aan Majeed and presented them with Islam.

Iyaas bin Mu’aaz said, “O people! By Allah! This is far superior to that task for which we have come!” However, Abul Haysar picked up a few pebbles, flung them onto Iyaas’s face and retorted, “We have not come here for this.” This silenced Iyaas, and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then rose and departed from the meeting and this group thereafter returned to Madinah Munawwarah.

A few days later, Iyaas passed away. As he was breathing his last, words such as ‘Laa ilaaha illallah’, ‘Allahu Akbar’, ‘Subhaanallah’ and ‘Alhamdulillah’ were flowing on his tongue. All those who were present heard these words and this left no doubt in their minds that he passed away as a Muslim.
