During the days of Haj, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) also visited the tribe of Banu Zuhal bin Shaibaan. Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) also accompanied him on this visit.

Mafrooq bin ‘Amr and Haani bin Qabeesah were among the chieftains of this tribe. Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) addressed Mafrooq saying, “Have you not heard of the nubuwwah and risaalah (i.e. prophethood) of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)? Here is Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) with me, he is the prophet of Allah.”

Mafrooq replied, “Yes, I have heard of him.” He then addressed Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and asked, “O my brother of the Quraish! What are you inviting people towards?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came forward and replied, “(I am inviting people to) believe in Allah alone without ascribing any partners unto Him, to accept me as His Rasul and messenger, and to support His deen. The Quraish declined to accept the commandment of Allah. They have rejected His Prophet, and in their intoxication of falsehood, they have become independent of the truth – whereas Allah Ta‘ala is the One who is completely independent and most praiseworthy.”

In other words, Allah Ta‘ala, who is completely independent and most praiseworthy, is not in need of you embracing deen. He really does not require your support and aid. Yes, if you are concerned about your personal success, then embrace the truth, accept the divine guidance and repent from falsehood and deviation.

Mafrooq then asked, “What do you invite to?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied by reciting the following verses of the Qur’aan Majeed:

“Say (O Muhammed [sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam]) come! I will recite what your Rabb has made forbidden over you; (He commands) that you do not ascribe any partner unto Him, and (you should) show kindness to parents, and do not kill your children out (of fear) of poverty – We sustain you as well as them – and do not come close to shameless actions – whether they are open or secret – and do not kill the being whom Allah has forbidden but for a just cause. This is what He has commanded you to do so that you may understand.” (Surah An’aam v. 151)

After listening to the recitation of these verses, Mafrooq exclaimed, “By Allah! This is indisputably not the word of an earthly being!”

He further requested, “O my brother of the Quraish! What else do you invite people towards?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) responded by reciting the following verses:

“Indeed, Allah ordains justice, ihsaan (showing kindness) and giving to the relatives, and He prohibits shamelessness, evil deeds and oppression. He advises you so that you may take heed.” (Surah Nahl v. 90)

Hearing this, Mafrooq responded, “By Allah! You have invited towards extremely excellent character and most righteous actions. However, the problem is that I am a bit reluctant to conclude an accord with you without consulting my people. I feel it inappropriate to take such steps in their absence. I am uncertain about whether they will sanction this accord or not. Furthermore, we fall within the royal administrative control of Chosroe. We had assured him that we would not appoint any leader without consulting with him first. I am convinced that if we were to enter into any accord with you, Chosroe would certainly treat this as an insult to his authority.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was pleased with the honesty and truthfulness of Mafrooq and said, “Allah Himself is the Protector and Assistant of His Deen. Those who support the Deen of Allah - soon Allah Ta‘ala will make them the heirs of the riches and lands of Chosroe.”

Thereafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) held Hazrat Abu Bakr’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) hand, rose from this meeting and proceeded to the gathering of the Aws and Khazraj tribes of Madinah Munawwarah. (The details of this meeting will soon be discussed insha Allah.) These tribes embraced Islam and pledged to assist and support Islam.
