Not Receving Reward for One’s Salaah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) mentioned, “We have been commanded to establish salaah and discharge zakaat, and the one who does not discharge his zakaat, there is no salaah for him.” [1]

The Ulama explain this Hadith to mean that though the obligation of salaah will be fulfilled, the person will not receive any reward for his salaah on account of him not discharging his zakaat. From this Hadith, it is clear that when a person neglects one branch of Deen, a detrimental effect is witnessed in all the other branches of Deen. Hence, just as neglecting zakaat impacts on salaah, similarly neglecting salaah will impact on zakaat and all the other branches of Deen. [2]

Wealth Turning into a Snake and Punishing the Owner

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “He who, despite being given wealth by Allah Ta‘ala, does not discharge his zakaat, his wealth will be made into a poisonous, bald-headed snake with two black spots on its head (this is a sign of the snake being extremely venomous and dangerous). On the Day of Qiyaamah, it will coil itself around his neck and bite his cheeks saying, ‘I am your wealth! I am your treasure!’” [3]

Wearing Bracelets of Fire

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that on one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saw gold bracelets on the wrists of two women. On seeing the bracelets, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) enquired from them as to whether they had discharged its zakaat. When they replied in the negative, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) responded, “Do you wish that in place of these gold bracelets, you are made to wear bracelets of fire?” They replied, “No.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said, “Then hasten in discharging their zakaat.” [4]
