Sunnats and Aadaab of Clothing – Part One

1. A believer should not feel ashamed to expose his identity as a Muslim and adopt the sunnah attire in his life. Adopting the sunnah attire is a means of identifying with the way of Islam and a means of showing our true love for Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and his mubaarak lifestyle. [1]

2. Men should not wear clothing that resembles the clothing of women, nor should women wear clothing that resembles the clothing of men. The Hadith has cursed such men and women who imitate each other in clothing. [2]

It is reported from Hazrat Ibnu Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) that Hazrat Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had cursed those men that imitate women (in their dressing and appearance), and those women that imitate men (in their dressing and appearance). It is reported that on one occasion, a woman passed by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) carrying a bow around her neck (in the spirit to imitate the soldiers of Deen). Observing this scene, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “May Allah’s curse fall on those men that imitate women and those women that imitate men in their ways.” [3]

3. It is not permissible for men to wear clothing made of silk. However, it is permissible for women to wear silken clothing. [4]

Hazrat Abu Moosa Ash’ari (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Wearing silk and using gold (as jewellery) has been made impermissible upon the males of my Ummah and permissible for the females of my Ummah.” [5]

4. Do not adopt the fashions and trends of the kuffaar in your dressing. Your clothing should not have any emblem or logo that has a kufr connotation or is a sign of kufr e.g. the cross, devil, Nike tick, etc. [6]

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had seen him wear two yellow-coloured pieces of cloth. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “This is from the clothing of the disbelievers, therefore do not wear it.” [7]

5. Avoid wearing such clothing that has Western logos or imprints of the kuffaar on it. [8]

[2] والمعنى المؤثر التشبه بالرجال

قال العلامة ابن عابدين – رحمه الله - : (قوله والمعنى المؤثر) أي العلة المؤثرة في إثمها التشبه بالرجال فإنه لا يجوز كالتشبه بالنساء (رد المحتار 6/407)

[4] (حرم للرجل لا للمرأة لبس الحرير إلا قدر أربع أصابع) أي حرم على الرجل لا على المرأة لبس الحرير (تبيين الحقائق 6/14)

[5] سنن الترمذي، الرقم: 1720، وقال: حديث حسن صحيح

(وكره لبس المعصفر والمزعفر الأحمر والأصفر للرجال)

قال العلامة ابن عابدين – رحمه الله -: ووجدنا النهي عن لبسه لعلة قامت بالفاعل من تشبه بالنساء أو بالأعاجم أو التكبر (رد المحتار 6/358)
