After speaking to the Jewish scholars and receiving the three questions that they should pose to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Nadhr and ‘Uqbah returned to Makkah filled with joy and said to the Quraish, “We have returned with something that will decisively conclude this matter.” They then came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and posed these questions to him.

The Quraish of Makkah Consult the Jewish Scholars - Part One

Written by

When the Quraish realized that their questions were foolish and prejudiced, they engaged in mutual consultation and decided to send Nadhr bin Haarith and ‘Uqbah bin Abu Mu‘ait to Madinah Munawwarah to enquire regarding Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) from the Jewish scholars residing there. The reason for them going to the Jews is that they were reasonably acquainted with the knowledge of the Ambiyaa (‘alaihimus salaam) and were more knowledgeable regarding the signs of the prophets.

Since Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was sent to this world as Rahmatan Lil-Aalameen (a mercy unto the worlds), the various forms of divine punishment that had befallen the various ummats were withdrawn from this ummat due to the barakah (blessing) of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) rejected this proposal of the Quraish as well, they replied, “Very well! Make du‘aa to Allah Ta‘ala to send some divine punishment upon us.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) responded, “It is the prerogative of Allah Ta‘ala to decide whether He will punish you or grant you respite.”

When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) rejected this proposal of the Quraish, they replied, “Very well! If you cannot do this for us, then make du‘aa for yourself for Allah Ta‘ala to send an angel from the heavens who will accompany you wherever you go and attest to your truthfulness. Also request Allah to bless you with orchards, palaces and treasures of gold and silver through which your nobility and piety will become clear. We observe that you also go to the market places in search of sustenance.”

After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) rejected this proposal of the Quraish, they said to him, “Very well, if you do not accept our previous proposal, then we wish to make another proposal which we hope that you will accept.

“You are aware of the fact that your people are in poverty, and this city of Makkah is also in constraints. We are surrounded by mountains on all sides, without any trace of greenery and lushness. Thus, request your Lord, who has commissioned you as a prophet, to move the mountains of this city elsewhere so that this city becomes more spacious.

The Revelation of Surah Kaafiroon

Written by

The Quraish requested Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to refrain from speaking out against their idols. They further requested that if this was not possible, then they could come to a compromise where Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) should worship their idols for one year, and they would worship his deity for the next year and so forth. When the Quraish made this proposal, the following surah was revealed:

Say! O you disbelievers! I do not worship what you worship, nor do you worship that which I worship. Neither will I worship that which you worship, nor will you worship that which I worship. For you is your religion, and for me is my religion. (Surah Kaafiroon)

‘Utbah took his leave from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and returned to his associates, but the ‘Utbah who returned was not the same ‘Utbah who went. This is why Abu Jahal exclaimed, “’Utbah does not look like the same ‘Utbah. It seems as though ‘Utbah has turned into a Saabi (one who has renounced the religion of his forefathers).”

After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied to ‘Utbah bin Rabee‘ah, he recited the following verses of the Qur’aan Majeed before him:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked ‘Utbah bin Rabee‘ah, “O Abul Waleed! Have you said what you wish to say?” When ‘Utbah replied in the affirmative, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Very well, now listen to what I wish to say. I neither crave for your riches and wealth nor do I have any inclination towards your leadership and rule. I am the Rasul of Allah Ta‘ala whom He has sent to you with His divine message. He has revealed a divine book unto me and has commanded me to give you glad tidings of His reward and warnings of His punishment. I have conveyed His message to you, and as a form of good counsel and wishing good for you, I have cautioned you. If you accept this message, it will be a source of success for you in both the worlds. However, if you fail to accept this message, I am willing to exercise patience until Allah Ta‘ala passes judgment between us.”
