When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to stay in the home of Hazrat Abu Ayyoob Ansaari (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), then Hazrat Abu Ayyoob (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) insisted that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) reside on the upper floor of the home while he and his family would reside on the lower floor.

However, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) felt that since he would be receiving visitors all the time, if Hazrat Abu Ayyoob (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and his family resided on the lower floor, then they would be inconvenienced by the constant arrival of visitors. It was for this reason that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) did not agree to reside on the upper floor, but rather preferred staying on the lower floor.

Hazrat Abu Ayyoob (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) says:

This is how we came to live on the upper floor. One day, a water container fell and broke. Overcome by concern, we swiftly spread our blanket over it to absorb the water before it seeped down to the lower floor. My wife - Ummu Ayyoob, and I promptly mopped up the area with our blanket, and this was the only blanket we possessed.

Daily, we would prepare meals for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and send it down to him. After eating, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would send the leftover food back to us. In order to acquire barakah (blessings) from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Ummu Ayyoob and I would search for the place where Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had placed his fingers and eaten from, and we would also eat from there.

One day, we added some garlic and onions to the food. Thereafter, when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) sent the food back to us, we noticed that there were no impressions in the food from his blessed fingers (i.e. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had not partaken of the food).

Filled with worry, I went to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and said, “O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! You sent the food back to us without partaking from it. We found no impression of your fingers in it. In order to acquire blessings, Ummu Ayyoob and I deliberately eat from the place where your blessed fingers leave an impression on.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “I perceived the odour of garlic and onions in the food. You may go ahead and eat it. However, since I communicate with the angels, I abstain from eating such food.”

Hazrat Abu Ayyoob (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) says, “From that day on, we never added onions and garlic to his food.”
