The chieftains of the Quraish had taken the decision, after holding a meeting in Daar-un-Nadwah, that they would assassinate Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) that very night.

When night arrived, and darkness spread across the land, then as decided, the Quraish surrounded Rasulullah’s (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) house, planning to attack him when he exits his home. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) instructed Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) saying, “Wear my green shawl and lie down on my bed. Do not fear, as no harm will come to you.”

Although the Quraish were the enemies of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), they regarded him as the most trustworthy and honest person and would entrust their valuables to him for safekeeping. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) handed over all these entrusted items to Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and instructed him to return them to their respective owners the following morning.

Abu Jahal, the accursed, was standing outside the home of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and while laughing, he mockingly said to his companions, “Muhammed claims that if you follow him, (then in this world,) you will become the rulers of the Arabs and non-Arabs alike, and after you die, you will enjoy eternal paradise, and if you do not follow him, then in this world, you will be killed at the hands of his companions, and after you die, you will burn in the fire of Hell.”

While Abu Jahal was saying this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) emerged from his home. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) picked up a handful of sand and said, “Yes! I am the one who says this, and you will also be among those who will be killed by my companions in this world, and will burn in the fire of Hell after you die.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) also recited the beginning verses of Surah Yaseen on the sand which he was holding, until he reached the verse:

وَ جَعَلۡنَا مِنۡۢ بَیۡنِ اَیۡدِیۡہِمۡ سَدًّا وَّ مِنۡ خَلۡفِہِمۡ سَدًّا فَاَغۡشَیۡنٰہُمۡ فَہُمۡ لَا یُبۡصِرُوۡنَ ﴿۹﴾

And We have placed a barrier in front of them and a barrier behind them, and We covered them, so they do not see. (Surah Yaseen v. 9)

After reciting this verse on the sand, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) threw this sand over their heads, and Allah Ta‘ala caused a veil to come over their eyes, due to which they could not see Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), even though he passed by, right before their very eyes.

Rasulullah (Sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then proceeded to the home of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), after which they departed together on the road leading to Mount Thowr. On reaching Mount Thowr, they hid in one of its caves.

In the interim, a certain person passed by the home of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and on seeing the Quraish waiting outside, he asked them, “Why are you standing here, and who are you waiting for?” They replied, “We are waiting here for Muhammed to come out from his home. As soon as he comes out from his home, we will kill him.” Hearing this, the man retorted, “May Allah Ta‘ala cause your efforts to go in vain! Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has passed by you people and he even threw sand over your heads.”

The following morning, when the Quraish saw Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) wake up from the bed of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), they exclaimed, “By Allah! The man who told us that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had passed by was speaking the truth!” Thereafter, filled with remorse and sorrow, they asked Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “Where is Muhammed?” Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “I do not know where he is.”

Note: The disbelievers of the Quraish surrounded the home of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) for the entire night, but they did not break into the home at night, as the Arabs regarded it shameful to break into a person’s home while womenfolk may be present in the home.
