What is Bay’at?

Bay’at is an Arabic word derived from “bay’a” which means “to sell”. In the terminology of the Shari’ah, bay’at refers to happily and enthusiastically selling one’s life and wealth in the hand of Allah Ta‘ala in exchange of Jannah.

When the Ansaar began to take the pledge (bay’at) at the hands of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), then Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawaahah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) enquired, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! You may stipulate in this pledge any condition that you want us to agree to (and you are at liberty to take whatever assurances you want from us), but tell me, what will we attain in exchange of this pledge that we give you?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “You will attain Jannah.”

Hearing this, Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawaahah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) remarked:

“This is a most profitable transaction! We will neither cancel this transaction nor will we ever seek to terminate it!”

Upon this, Allah Ta‘ala revealed the following verses:

“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and wealth in exchange of them receiving Jannah. They wage battle in the path of Allah in which they sometimes kill (the enemy) and are sometimes killed (by the enemy). This is the true promise of Allah in the Taurah, Injeel and the Qur’aan. And who is more faithful to his promise than Allah? So rejoice in the deal which you have made, and that is the supreme success.” (Surah Taubah v. 111)

In Jannah, a unique market will be erected. Those who have sold their wealth and lives to Allah in this world, and have completely surrendered their lives and wealth to Him, will be allowed to choose whatever they desire in this market without being charged as they have already paid the price for it in advance (in this world by them sacrificing their lives and wealth for Allah Ta‘ala).

How well and apt an Arab poet describes this when he says:

“Hasten to the market wherein the lovers of Allah Ta‘ala will meet. That market will be the meeting place for the people of Jannah.

(Those who had sold their lives and wealth to Allah in this world will be told) “Take whatever you desire from it without paying any price,’ as the traders (those who entered into this deal with Allah) had already paid its price in advance (in the world) and they had submitted (and devoted) themselves entirely in this world to please Allah Ta‘ala.”

Important Note

While taking the pledge of allegiance, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would only clasp the hands of the men. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) did not hold the hands of the women. In the case of the women, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would accept a verbal pledge from them and inform them that their pledge of allegiance is complete and they may return.
