Hazrat Urwah Baariqi (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was a Sahaabi of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Among the unique aspects of his life is that he was the first Qadhi to be appointed over the city of Kufah by none other than Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). (Tahzeeb-ul-Kamaal 20/6)

Among the Ahaadith which he reports from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is the Hadith pertaining to jihaad. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Goodness is tied to the forelock of horses until the Day of Qiyaamah – (the goodness of earning immense) reward and booty.” (Saheeh Bukhaari #2852)

Since the effort of jihaad will continue until the Day of Qiyaamah, and horses are a means of engaging in warfare, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned the great reward and virtue one will receive through engaging in jihaad on horseback.

In another Hadith, it is reported that when a person keeps a horse with the intention of jihaad, then the food and drink which the horse consumes become a means of earning good deeds for the owner, Similarly, the Hadith mentions that when the horse urinates or defecates, then this will also be a means of one earning good deeds on the Day of Qiyaamah. The Hadith mentions that all these things will be placed in the scale of good deeds for the owner on the Day of Qiyaamah. (Saheeh Bukhaari #2853)

Hazrat Urwah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was so eager to earn this great reward that he purchased many horses and reared them with the intention of jihaad. Shabeeb bin Gharqadah (rahimahullah) mentions, “I once saw seventy horses tied at the home of Hazrat Urwah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) which he kept with the intention of jihaad.” (Istee’aab 3/1066)

Allah Ta‘ala had blessed Hazrat Urwah Baariqi (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) with abundant barakah in his business transactions. This profound barakah was on account of the special du‘aa which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had made for him.

It is reported that on one occasion, a trade caravan arrived in Madinah Munawwarah. Seeing the caravan, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) handed one dinaar to Hazrat Urwah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and said, “O Urwah! Go to the caravan and purchase a goat for us.”

Hazrat Urwah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) says, “I thus came to the caravan and began to bargain with the owner of the caravan, until he eventually sold me two goats for one dinaar.” Thereafter, Hazrat Urwah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) sold one of the goats for one dinaar.

Hence, on returning to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Urwah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) presented him with the goat he had requested and also gave him the one dinaar which he had acquired as profit. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was greatly pleased with him and made the following du‘aa saying:

اَللّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُ فِيْ صَفَقَةِ يَمِيْنِهِ

O Allah! Place barakah in the business transactions of his right hand (i.e. the business transactions which he carries out)

It is mentioned that on account of the du‘aa of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Hazrat Urwah (radhiyallahu ‘ahu) was blessed with so much of barakah from Allah Ta‘ala that it is said that had he purchased sand (i.e. a thing which has no value or very little value), he would have profited in it.

Hazrat Urwah (radhiyallahu ‘ahu) himself says, “I can recall the time when I went to Kunaasah (a place in Kufah) and engaged in trade. (Allah Ta‘ala blessed me with immense barakah. Such was the barakah that) before returning home to my family, I acquired forty thousand dirhams which was my profit alone.”
