Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Three people are such that Allah tabaaraka wata‘ala has made Jannah haraam upon them (i.e. until they do not undergo punishment in Jahannum and are purified from their sins, they will not gain entry into Jannah); (the first person is) the one who is a habitual consumer of wine (or any other intoxicant), (the second person is) the one who is disobedient to his parents, and (the third person is) the ‘dayyooth’ - the one who allows people to commit sin with his wife (or any of his household).”

Note:

The Muhadditheen have explained that in this Hadith, ‘committing sin’ refers to zina, or any immoral or shameless action. (Mirqaat 6/2390)

In another Hadith, the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) enquired from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) as to who ‘dayyooth’ refers to, and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “The one who is not concerned as to which person (i.e. non-mahram man) enters his home and freely intermingles with his wife.” (Majma’uz Zawaa’id #7722)

From these Ahaadith, we understand that the husband, as the head of the household, has the responsibility of upholding deen, hayaa and purdah among his household (wife and children) and preventing them from falling into evil and sin.

If the husband is not concerned regarding the deen and hayaa of his wife and children, and allows them to become casual with all types of people (non-mahram people), and thereafter they fall into worse sins such as zina (e.g. premarital relationships and dating) – then he will be held accountable by Allah Ta‘ala and will be punished on the Day of Qiyaamah.

May Allah Ta‘ala assist us all to uphold the laws of hayaa and purdah correctly and completely in our homes and lives – ameen.
