عن ابن عمر أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: إذا كذب العبد تباعد عنه الملك ميلا من نتن ما جاء به (سنن الترمذي، الرقم: 1972)

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When the servant of Allah Ta‘ala speaks a lie, the angels (appointed to protect him) distance themselves and go one mile away from him on account of the stench of his lie (which he has spoken).”

Note:

From this Hadith, we understand that sins and evil actions give off a stench and bad smell. Even though we are unable to perceive the bad smell, the pure creation of Allah Ta‘ala – the angels – perceive it and flee from the person who speaks lies. If Allah Ta‘ala wishes, then at times, He allows certain servants to perceive the stench and stink of these evil actions.

Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports:

On one occasion, we were with Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) when a wind carrying a bad odor began to blow. On perceiving the bad odor, Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), “Do you know what is causing the bad smell in the wind? This bad smell is the stench that is emanating from the mouths of those people who are making gheebah (backbiting) the believers.” (Majma’uz Zawaa’id #13121)

Hence, just as pictures of animate objects cause us to be deprived of the company of the angels, speaking lies also causes us to be deprived of their presence and blessed company. Hence, when the angels are present with one, then he is protected by the angels and motivated to carry out good deeds. However, when the angels move away, then he loses this special protection, does not receive the motivation of the angels and becomes vulnerable to the wrongs of the environment and the evil influence of the shayaateen.
