5. One should not delay in settling his debts. It is reported in the Hadith that the debtor’s procrastination in settling his debts, despite him having the means to do so, is a form of oppression.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The delaying of a wealthy person in settling his debts is a form of oppression.” [1]

6. If the debtor is in financial constraints and difficulty, the creditor should not harass him, rather he should take pity on his condition and grant him respite in settling his debts.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Whoever grants respite to a poor person (in settling his debts) or waives his debt, Allah Ta‘ala will grant him shade in the shade of His Arsh on the Day of Qiyaamah, on that day wherein there will be no shade besides His shade.” [2]
