This chapter deals with the unparalleled sacrifices of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) in the path of Allah Ta‘ala, and the execution of those evil enemies who rebelled against Allah Ta‘ala in the various military campaigns.

When the divine commandment of jihaad was revealed, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) commenced fighting and jihaad, and despatched armies to various regions.

In the terminology of the Ulama of Seerah, the battle in which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) himself participated is referred to as a “ghazwah’ (the plural of which is ghazawaat), while the expedition in which he did not personally participate is referred to as a “sariyyah’ (the plural of which is saraayaa).

Sariyyah of Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

The first sariyyah (small contingent) which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) dispatched in the path of Allah Ta‘ala was sent out seven months after the Hijrah, either in the month of Ramadhaan 1 AH, or either in the month of Rabee’ul-Awwal 2 AH (based on the different views of the Ulama). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) dispatched this sariyyah, which consisted of thirty Muhaajireen, towards Seef-ul-Bahr under the leadership of Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

The purpose of sending this sariyyah was so that they pursue the trade caravan of three hundred travellers which was under the commandership of Abu Jahl. This caravan was returning to Makkah from Syria.

After the Hijrah had taken place to Madinah Munawwarah, this was the first sariyyah that was sent out by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in the path of Allah Ta‘ala, and this sariyyah only consisted of Muhaajireen. None of the Ansaar Sahaabah were part of this sariyyah.

When Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reached Seef-ul-Bahr, and both parties drew their battle lines to commence the battle, then Majdi bin Amr Juhani intervened between them and mediated between the two groups. As a result, Abu Jahl returned to Makkah Mukarramah with his caravan and Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) returned to Madinah Munawwarah.
