Sunnats of the Musjid (9)
29. While in the Musjid, remain constantly engaged in the zikr of Allah Ta‘ala.
عن علي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : يوشك أن يأتي على الناس زمان لا يبقى من الإسلام إلا اسمه ولا يبقى من القرآن إلا رسمه مساجدهم عامرة وهي خراب من الهدى (شعب الإيمان رقم 1763)
Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Soon a time will come upon the ummah where nothing of Islam will remain except in names (i.e. people will have Islamic names but no Islamic values), and nothing of the Qur’aan will remain except its words. Their masaajid will be built in a beautiful manner but will be void of guidance (i.e. people will not perform salaah in it).”
26. Remain calm while seated in the Musjid and do not be unmindful of the sanctity of the place. Some people whilst waiting for salaah fidget with their clothing or play with their cellphones. This is against the honour and respect of the Musjid.
ذٰلِکَ ٭ وَ مَنۡ یُّعَظِّمۡ شَعَآئِرَ اللّٰہِ فَاِنَّہَا مِنۡ تَقۡوَی الۡقُلُوۡبِ ﴿۳۲﴾
And whoever holds in honour the symbols of Allah, indeed such (honour) comes from the piety of the heart.
وَ مَنۡ اَظۡلَمُ مِمَّنۡ مَّنَعَ مَسٰجِدَ اللّٰہِ اَنۡ یُّذۡکَرَ فِیۡہَا اسۡمُہٗ وَ سَعٰی فِیۡ خَرَابِہَا ؕ اُولٰٓئِکَ مَا کَانَ لَہُمۡ اَنۡ یَّدۡخُلُوۡہَاۤ اِلَّا خَآئِفِیۡنَ ۬ؕ لَہُمۡ فِی الدُّنۡیَا خِزۡیٌ وَّ لَہُمۡ فِی الۡاٰخِرَۃِ عَذَابٌ عَظِیۡمٌ ﴿۱۱۴﴾
And who are more unjust than those who prevent the name of Allah from being mentioned in His Masaajid and strive towards their destruction. It is not fitting for them to enter them except in fear. For them in this world is disgrace and they will have in the Hereafter a great punishment.
22. It is not permissible to remove any of the Musjid’s items or goods for one’s personal use.[1]
23. Every musalli has an equal right in the use of the Musjid items. Hence it is not permissible for one to reserve any place or item of the Musjid for himself.[2]
عن عبد الرحمن بن شبل رضي الله عنه قال : نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن نقرة الغراب وافتراش السبع وأن يوطن الرجل المكان في المسجد كما يوطن البعير (سنن أبي داود رقم 862)
Hazrat ‘Abdur Rahmaan bin Shibl (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) prohibited the pecking of a crow (i.e. making sajdah extremely swiftly), and spreading one’s forearms on the ground (i.e.in sajdah) in the manner a predatory animal sits down, and a person reserving and booking a place for himself (permanently in the Musjid) as a camel does.”
19. Do not force yourself into the front saff if there is insufficient space, thus causing inconvenience to others.
عن عبد الله بن بسر رضي الله عنه قال جاء رجل يتخطى رقاب الناس يوم الجمعة والنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يخطب فقال له النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اجلس فقد آذيت (سنن أبي داود رقم 1120)
Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin Busr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion a person entered the Musjid on the day of Jumu‘ah while Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was delivering the khutbah. The man began climbing over the shoulders of people (trying to get to the front saff). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) (reproached him) saying, “Sit down, for certainly you have caused inconvenience (to the people).”
15. One should not engage in worldly talk, nor discuss worldly affairs in the Musjid.
عن الحسن مرسلا قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : يأتي على الناس زمان يكون حديثهم في مساجدهم في أمر دنياهم فلا تجالسوهم فليس لله فيهم حاجة (البيهقي في شعب الإيمان رقم 2701)
Hazrat Hasan (rahimahullah) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “A time is soon to dawn upon the ummah when people will discuss worldly affairs in the Musjid. Do not sit with such people, for Allah Ta‘ala has no need for them.”
11. One should not carry out any business transaction while in the Musjid.
عن عمرو بن شعيب عن أبيه عن جده قال : نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن تناشد الأشعار في المسجد وعن البيع والاشتراء فيه وأن يتحلق الناس يوم الجمعة قبل الصلاة في المسجد (سنن الترمذي رقم 322)
Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) prohibited the singing of poetry in the Musjid, as well as buying and selling, and that people have a gathering in the Musjid on the day of Jumu‘ah before the Jumu‘ah salaah.
7. One should be dressed correctly when coming to the Musjid.
یٰبَنِیۡۤ اٰدَمَ خُذُوۡا زِیۡنَتَکُمۡ عِنۡدَ کُلِّ مَسۡجِدٍ وَّ کُلُوۡا وَ اشۡرَبُوۡا وَ لَا تُسۡرِفُوۡا ۚ اِنَّہٗ لَا یُحِبُّ الۡمُسۡرِفِیۡنَ ﴿٪۳۱﴾
O children of Aadam, take your adornment at the place of sajdah (i.e. when performing salaah)
3. One should proceed to the Musjid calmly. One should not run to the Musjid.
عن أبي هريرة قال : سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول : إذا أقيمت الصلاة فلا تأتوها تسعون وأتوها تمشون عليكم السكينة فما أدركتم فصلوا وما فاتكم فأتموا (صحيح البخاري رقم 908)
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) say, “When the iqaamat is called out for salaah, then do not proceed towards the salaah whilst you are running, rather come walking with ease and tranquility. Whatever portion of the salaah you perform with the imaam, then perform it; and whatever you missed out, then complete it (i.e. after the imaam completes the salaah).”
1. Enter the Musjid with the right foot.
عن عائشة رضى الله عنها قالت كان النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم ليعجبه التيمن فى تنعله وترجله وطهوره وفى شأنه كله (صحيح البخاري 1/29)
Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would like commencing from the right side when wearing his shoes, combing his hair, performing wudhu and when carrying out all other works.
عن أنس بن مالك رضى الله عنه أنه كان يقول من السنة إذا دخلت المسجد أن تبدأ برجلك اليمنى وإذا خرجت أن تبدأ برجلك اليسرى هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم فقد احتج بشداد بن سعيد أبي طلحة الراسبي ولم يخرجاه (المستدرك للحاكم رقم 791)
It is reported from Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that he said, “It is from the sunnah (established from the words of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)) that when you enter the Musjid, you should enter with your right foot; and when you exit from the Musjid, you should exit with your left foot.”
