History (704)
When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) reached forty and entered the cave of Hira, as per his blessed habit, an angel suddenly entered the cave and greeted him with salaam. The angel then said, “Read!” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “I am unable to read.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) recounts, “Upon this, the angel embraced me so forcefully that there was no limit to my difficulty. He then released me saying, “Read!” Yet again, I responded:
ما أنا بقارئ
“I am unable to read.”
Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) further relates:
ثم حبب إليه الخلاء وكان يخلو بغار حراء
“Thereafter, solitude was made dear to him. He would often go into seclusion in the cave of Hira.”
When Allah Ta‘ala intends to shower His special mercy upon a person, He instills the yearning for solitude and seclusion within this person’s heart.
Imaam Bukhaari (rahimahullah) and Imaam Muslim (rahimahullah) narrate that Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) said:
أول ما بدئ به رسول اللّٰه صلى اللّٰه عليه وسلم من الوحي الرؤيا الصالحة في النوم فكان لا يرى رؤيا إلا جاءت مثل فلق الصبح
“The commencement of divine revelation upon Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was with pious dreams. He would not see any dream except that it would come to pass as true as clearly as the crack of dawn.”
Imaam Muzani (rahimahullah) reports:
On one occasion, we were present by Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) when an old man wearing woolen clothing appeared. The old man then asked Imaam Shaafi‘ee, “May I ask a question?” Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) gave him permission. He then asked, “What are the Shar’ee proofs in the Deen of Allah Ta‘ala?” Imaam Shaafi’ee (rahimahullah) replied, “The Kitaab of Allah Ta‘ala.” He then asked, “And what else?” Imaam Shaafi’ee (rahimahullah) replied, “The Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). He then asked, “And what else?” Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) replied, “The consensus of the Ummah.” He then asked, “What is your proof for this?” Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) thought for a while. The old man then said, “I give you respite for three days, either you bring me proof from the Qur’aan, or seek forgiveness and repent to Allah Ta‘ala.”
Purchasing a Well in Jannah
When the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) migrated to Madeenah Munawwarah, the water that was found in Madeenah Munawwarah was difficult for them to drink due it being bitter. However, there was a Jew who had a well of sweet water named Roomah, and he used to sell the water of this well to the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum).
On one occasion, the Quriash placed some food before Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Zaid bin ‘Amr bin Nufail was also present in this gathering. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) refused to partake of the food. Subsequently, Zaid also declined to eat this food saying, “I refuse to consume the meat of an animal slaughtered in the name of idols and food dedicated to idols. I will only consume food upon which the name of Allah Ta‘ala is taken exclusively.”
When mention would be made, in the presence of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah), of people who were responsible for fabricating and innovating things in Deen, Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) would say the following, emphasizing the importance of holding onto the sunnah:
Hazrat ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Azeez (rahimahullah) said, “Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the righteous Khulafaa (Khulafaa-e-Raashideen and the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum)) after him showed us the mubaarak sunnah and the way of Deen. In order to follow the Qur’aan Majeed, it will be necessary for one to hold firmly to the mubaarak sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Practicing on the mubaarak sunnah is the only way to show complete obedience to Allah Ta‘ala and strengthen one’s Deen. After the mubaarak sunnah has been shown to us by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), the righteous Khulafaa and the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), it is not permissible for any person to change the mubaarak sunnah practices or to think of introducing anything new in Deen that opposes these sunnah practices. The one who follows the mubaarak sunnah will be rightly guided, and the one who seeks the divine assistance of Allah Ta‘ala through following the mubaarak sunnah will receive the divine assistance of Allah Ta‘ala. The one who abandons the way of the mubaarak sunnah will be treading a path which is not the path of the believers. Allah Ta‘ala will leave him in the path he has chosen and enter him into Jahannum, and how evil an abode it is!”
When Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) would quote this statement of Hazrat ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Azeez (rahimahullah), he would become extremely happy.

Glad Tidings of Martyrdom
Hazrat Anas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) once ascended the Mountain of Uhud with Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). The mountain then began to tremble and shake (out of the excitement of these blessed personalities placing their feet on it). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) stamped his mubaarak foot on the mountain and addressed it saying, “Be still, O Uhud, for upon you are none other than a Nabi, a Siddeeq and two martyrs.”
(Saheeh Bukhaari #3686)
Imaam Bukhaari (rahimahullah) and Imaam Muslim (rahimahullah) narrate on the authority of Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that during the reconstruction of the Ka‘bah, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) also carried boulders to the site.
His uncle, Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), advised him, “Son! Undo your lower garment and place it on your shoulder so that your shoulder will be protected from being abraded by the boulders.” On the advice of his uncle, he began to open his lower garment when he immediately fell unconscious.
Qadhi Abu ‘Abdillah As-Saymaree (rahimahullah) narrates the following from Imaam Abu Yusuf (rahimahullah):
Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) was once asked regarding the two renowned students of Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “Who is greater, Hazrat ‘Alqamah (rahimahullah) or Hazrat Aswad (rahimahullah)?” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) replied, “By Allah! I am only worthy of taking their names by making du‘aa and istighfaar for them (that Allah Ta‘ala raise them in the Hereafter and overlook their shortcomings) out of respect for them, so how can I judge who is greater between them?”

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – Part Fourteen
Written by user2One of the Asharah Mubasharah:
Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was one of the ten Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) who were given the glad tidings of Jannah by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in one gathering.
It is reported from Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying:
(In the days of Jaahiliyyah, prior to Islam,) the thought of participating in any custom of Jaahiliyyah never occurred to me, except on two occasions. However, on these two occasions, Allah Ta‘ala saved me and protected me from participating in these customs.
Marroozi (rahimahullah) mentions:
I did not see poor people honored in any majlis (gathering) more than they were honored in the majlis of Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah). Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) was more inclined towards the poor than the rich and wealthy. He was blessed with the quality of tolerance and forbearance, and would not act on impulse or haste. He was extremely humble at all times, and was an embodiment of dignity and respect. When he would sit in his majlis after ‘Asr to attend to people’s problems and answer their deeni queries, then he would not speak until a question was posed to him. When he would proceed to the musjid, he would not walk ahead of people (showing himself to be distinguished and different from the people).
(Siyar A’laam min Nubalaa vol. 9 pg. 460)
Hazrat Zaid bin Haarithah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) narrates:
During the era of ignorance (the period prior to Islam), when the disbelievers would perform tawaaf of the Ka‘bah, they would pass their hands over the idols Isaaf and Naa’ilah.
Once, I accompanied Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in performing tawaaf of the Baytullah. As we passed these idols, I passed my hand over them. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) forbade me from doing this. I thought to myself, “I will touch them again to see what Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) will say.” Hence, I passed my hand over them again. Seeing this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said with sternness, “Did I not prohibit you?”
By Allah! From that day on, I never touched a single idol until the time when Allah Ta‘ala honored Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) with prophethood and revealed His divine speech upon him (i.e. I never touched an idol until the end of my life).”
