The Savior of the Sunnah

In Baghdad, Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) was known by the title ‘Naasir-us-Sunnah’ (the savior of the Sunnah).

Haafiz Ibnu Katheer (rahimahullah) says, “Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) memorized the Qur’aan Majeed when he was only seven, the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) when he was ten, and his Shaikh, Muslim bin Khallaad Al-Zanji (rahimahullah), permitted him to pass verdicts (Fatwa) when he was only fifteen (some narrations state that he was eighteen).”

Hazrat Abu Thowr (rahimahullah), one of the Mujtahideen of that era, says, “We never saw anyone as great as Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah).”

Disliking Sin and Abstaining from Places of Sin

عن العرس ابن عميرة الكندي عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: إذا عملت الخطيئة في الأرض كان من شهدها فكرهها وقال مرة: أنكرها كان كمن غاب عنها ومن غاب عنها فرضيها كان كمن شهدها (سنن أبي داود رقم 4345)

Hazrat ‘Urs bin ‘Umairah Al-Kindi (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “When sin is being committed in a place, then the one who is present and is not pleased with it (in another narration, it is mentioned, “he regards it to be wrong”), he will be like the one who was not present and did not witness it (i.e. he will not be sinful as being present was not of his choice), and the one who was not present where sin was being committed, yet he was pleased with the sin (and desired to be present), he will be like the one who was present where the sin was committed (i.e. he will also be sinful).”

The Reward of Sadaqah through reciting Durood

عن أبي سعيد الخدري رضي الله عنه عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: أيما رجل مسلم لم تكن عنده صدقة فليقل في دعائه: اللهم صل على محمد عبدك ورسولك وصل على المؤمنين والمؤمنات والمسلمين والمسلمات فإنها زكاة وقال: لا يشبع مؤمن خيرا حتى يكون منتهاه الجنة (القول البديع ص274)

Hazrat Abu Sa‘eed Khudri (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasululah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Whichever Muslim does not have anything to give in sadaqah, he should recite the following durood in his du‘aa as it will be a means of him receiving the reward of sadaqah and it will purify him of his sins.”

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُوْلِكَ وَصَلِّ عَلٰى الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَالْمُسْلِمِيْنَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ

O Allah! Send durood (i.e. shower Your mercy) upon Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Your slave and Rasul, and shower Your mercy upon all the mu’mineen and muslimeen, males and females.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thereafter said, “A believer continues to do good and is never fully satisfied with the good that he carries out until he finally (passes away on imaan and) reaches Jannah.”

Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – Part Forty One

Appointment as the Khalifah (continued)

On arriving at the home of Hazrat Miswar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) found Hazrat ‘Abdur Rahmaan bin ‘Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) standing in salaah.

When he completed his salaah, he turned to Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and said, “I have asked the people regarding the two of you, and I did not find any person who considered anyone from among the people to be greater than you in deeni status and position.”

Hazrat ‘Abdur Rahmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then made Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) pledge that from the two of them, the one whom he appointed as Khalifah would definitely rule with justice, and the one who was not appointed would definitely be pleased with the decision that was taken and accept the other person as Khalifah.

Assembly of Muslims in Daar-e-Arqam

As people continued to gradually embrace Islam, the number of Muslims increased until they now formed a small group. At that time, the house of Hazrat Arqam (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was chosen as a place for all the Muslims to congregate.

Hazrat Arqam (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was among the first Muslims, being either the seventh or tenth person to embrace Islam. His house was on Mt Safaa.

Right until Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) accepted Islam, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) would gather at the house of Hazrat Arqam (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). After Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) embraced Islam, the Muslims would gather wherever they wished.

On one occasion, Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) passed by the gathering of Abu Haazim (rahimahullah) who was engaged in narrating the Ahaadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) passed by and did not participate in the gathering.

When someone asked Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) the reason for this, he replied, “I did not find any place to sit in the gathering, and I disliked (and did not regard it in keeping to the high levels of respect) to listen to the blessed Ahaadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) while standing.”

The following incident depicts the extent of concern and love that Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had for the beloved uncle of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). He deeply desired that Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) embrace Islam and expressed that he would be more happy with his Islam than even his own father embracing Islam.

After the Battle of Badr was fought, Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was among those taken prisoner by the Muslims. He was captured by an Ansaari Sahaabi (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) during the battle. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had consulted the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) as to whether they should be released on ransom or be killed. A few Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) were of the opinion that they should be killed while the majority of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) felt that they should be released in exchange of some ransom. Eventually, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) decided that they should be released in exchange of ransom.

Sunnats of Sitting in a Deeni Discourse – Part Six

11. It is not permissible for one to remain in a gathering where a Deeni discourse is being held and any law of Shariah is violated e.g. the gathering wherein photography, videoing, intermingling of sexes etc are found.

12. If one is unclear about any aspect discussed during the Deeni discourse, then one should enquire from the speaker regarding it after the talk in a polite and respectable manner.

The Sign of a Complete and Perfect Muslim

عن جابر يقول: سمعت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: المسلم من سلم المسلمون من لسانه ويده (صحيح مسلم رقم 41)

Hazrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “A (complete and perfect) Muslim is one who is such that other Muslims are safe from the harm of his tongue and hand (i.e. people are not inconvenienced through him in any way).”

Note: The word ‘Muslim’ is derived from the word ‘Islam’ which connotes submission and obedience to Allah Ta‘ala. One of the root words of the word Muslim is ‘salm’ which means ‘showing peace’. Hence, the meaning of this Hadith is that a complete and perfect Muslim is one fulfills the command of Allah Ta‘ala at all times and is a means of peace and mercy to the creation. He is concerned at all times of not causing even the least amount of inconvenience to the entire creation.

Since the harm that comes to people is generally caused through the tongue and hand, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) made special mention of these two limbs.

Assistance Over the Siraat

عن عبد الرحمن بن سمرة رضي الله عنه قال: خرج علينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: إني رأيت البارحة عجبا رأيت رجلا من أمتي يزحف على الصراط مرة ويحبو مرة ويتعلق مرة فجاءته صلاته علي فأخذت بيده فأقامته على الصراط حتى جاوزه (القول البديع ص270)

Hazrat ‘Abur Rahmaan bin Samurah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to us and said, ‘Last night, I saw something extraordinary in a dream. I saw a man from my ummah who was crossing the pul-siraat (the bridge over jahannum). At times, he was crawling, at other times, he was dragging himself on his behind, and sometimes, he was hanging onto the siraat (about to fall into jahannum). Suddenly, his durood that he would recite upon me in the world came to him. It then held his hand, helped him to stand up on the siraat and assisted him to cross over it.”
