The Arch Enemies of Islam - Aswad bin ‘Abd-e-Yaghooth

Written by

Aswad bin ‘Abd-e-Yaghooth was the cousin of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) i.e. Aswad’s father was the brother of Hazrat Aaminah, the mother of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). His family lineage is as follows: Aswad bin ‘Abd-e-Yaghooth bin Wahab bin Munaaf bin Zuhrah.

He was also one of the bitter enemies of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). When he would see the poor Muslims, he would sarcastically remark, “These are the future kings of the world who will become the heirs of Chosroe’s kingdom.” When he would see Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he would sarcastically say, “What is the matter? Has nothing descended from the heavens today? He would also make other similar remarks.

The Arch Enemies of Islam – Aswad bin Muttalib

Written by

Whenever Aswad bin Muttalib and his friends would see Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and his Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), they would wink their eyes at each other and mockingly say, “These are the people who will rule the earth and seize the treasures of Caesar and Chosroe.” Making these sarcastic remarks, they would whistle and clap their hands in mockery.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) cursed Aswad in the following words, “O Allah! Make him blind (so that he is unable to wink his eyes in mockery) and destroy his son.” As a result, Aswad immediately became blind and his son was killed in the Battle of Badr.

At the time when the Quraish were making preparations for the Battle of Uhud, Aswad was ill, but he was still making an effort to incite the people against Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). He died before the Battle of Uhud.

The Arch Enemies of Islam – ‘Aas bin Waa’il Sahmi

Written by

‘Aas bin Waa’il Sahmi was the father of Hazrat ‘Amr bin ‘Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). He was also among the people who would mock and taunt the blessed personality of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

All the sons of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) passed away in infancy, during the lifetime of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Hence, ‘Aas bin Waa’il mentioned the following, taunting Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam):

إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا أَبْتَرْ لَا يَعِيْشُ لَهُ وَلَدْ

Indeed Muhammed is an Abtar. None of his sons survive.

The word Abtar refers to an animal with a severed tail. A person who is not survived by male descendants who will remember his name is like an animal with a severed tail (i.e. it is as though the person’s lineage is now severed and terminated).

The Arch Enemies of Islam – Nadr bin Haarith

Written by

Nadr bin Haarith was also one of the leaders of the Quraish. He would often travel to Persia for business. On his travels, he would purchase stories and historical accounts of the non-Arab monarchs. He would then relate these stories to the Quraish and would say to them, “Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) relates the incidents of ‘Aad and Thamud to you, but I will share with you the legends of Rustam, Asfandiyaar and the Persian monarchs.” People would enjoy listening to these tales (similar to the novels of today). Hence, they would listen to these tales and fables instead of listening the Qur’aan Majeed.

Nadr also purchased a singing slave girl and would make people listen to her melodious voice. Whenever he learnt of anyone being inclined towards Islam, he would take this slave girl to him and bid her to entertain him with food, drink and music. He would then ask him, “Is this better or that which Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) invites you to by instructing you to perform salaah, fast and wage jihaad against the enemies of Allah Ta‘ala?”

On one occasion, a few leaders of the Quraish including Waleed bin Mugheerah, Umayyah bin Khalaf, Abu Jahal, ‘Utbah bin Rabee‘ah and Shaibah bin Rabee‘ah came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to enquire regarding some aspects of Islam.

While Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was engaged in answering their questions, Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin Umme Maktoom (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), the blind mu’azzin of the musjid of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), also came to enquire regarding some issue. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thought to himself that since Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin Ummi Maktoom (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) is already a muslim, he can ask his question at some other time, however these people are influential, and if they embrace Islam, thousands of others will follow. Thus, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) did not give complete attention to Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin Ummi Maktoom (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Waleed bin Mugheerah would say, “It is extremely surprising that wahi descended upon Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Abu Mas’ood Thaqafi and I were excluded from receiving wahi, whereas both of us are eminent people of our cities. I am the leader of the Quraish and Abu Mas’ood is the leader of the clan of Thaqeef.”

The Arch Enemies of Islam – ‘Uqbah bin Abi Mu‘ait

Written by

‘Uqbah bin Abi Mu‘ait was the close friend of Ubayy bin Khalaf. On one occasion, ‘Uqbah came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and sat in his company for some time, listening to his message of deen. When Ubayy learnt of this, he immediately came to ‘Uqbah and said, “I have learnt that you sat in the company of Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), attentively listening to his words. By Allah! Until you do not go and spit on his face, it is haraam for me to talk to you and even look at your face!”

The Arch Enemies of Islam – Ubayy bin Khalaf

Written by

Ubayy bin Khalaf followed in the footsteps of his brother, Umayyah bin Khalaf, in his hostility towards Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

On one occasion, he picked up a decomposed bone and brought it before Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). He then crushed it in his hands, scattered its fragments into the wind and mockingly asked, “Will Allah be able to resurrect this?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Yes! Allah Ta‘ala will resurrect this bone as well as your bones after they decompose, and He will then hurl you into the fire of Jahannum.”

The Arch Enemies of Islam – Umayyah bin Khalaf Jumahi

Written by

Umayyah would openly and publicly revile Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). When he would pass by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he would mockingly wink his eyes. Due to this behaviour of his, the following surah was revealed:

Woe unto every backbiter and person who taunts! He who accumulates wealth and repeatedly counts it. Does he think that his wealth will bring him eternity? Never! Verily, he will be hurled into the crushing fire! And do you know what is the crushing fire? It is the kindled fire of Allah Ta‘ala which will leap over the hearts. Indeed, the fire will be sealed over them in extended pillars. (Surah Humazah)

Umayyah bin Khalaf was slain in the Battle of Badr, wither at the hands of Hazrat Khubaib (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) or Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

The Arch Enemies of Islam – Abu Lahab (Part Five)

Written by

Abu Lahab had three sons; ‘Utbah, Mu‘attib and ‘Utaibah. The first two embraced Islam at the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah.

As for ‘Utaibah, who had divorced the daughter of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) at the command of his father and was also rude and disrespectful to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he died on account of the curse of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
