The Abstinence of Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) – Part Four

On one occasion, a new khuff (leather sock) was made for Imaam Ahmed bin Hambal (rahimahullah). I thus brought the new khuff and delivered it to him, and it remained with him for the night. The following morning, Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) said to me, “I have been thinking about this khuff the entire night. It has distracted my heart (from my ‘ibaadah). Hence, I have decided that I will not wear it.”
The Generosity of Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) – Part Seven
Written by user2Rabee’ (rahimahullah) mentioned the following, describing the profound generosity of Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah):
Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) was such that if any person asked him for anything, his complexion would change as he would feel overwhelmed by the need to assist the person, and he would thereafter hasten to give the person that which he sought.
Respect for the Ahaadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) – Part Two

I was once present in the gathering of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah). While he was narrating Hadith to us, a scorpion stung him sixteen times. The facial complexion of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) began to change, however he continued teaching the Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
After the lesson was over and the students had departed, I asked him the reason for the change in his complexion during the lesson. He informed me regarding the scorpion stinging him and said, “I did not move from my place out of respect for the Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).”

Mis‘ar (rahimahullah) reports:
Whenever Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) would purchase anything for his family, he would spend the same amount of money which he spent on his family on the senior ‘Ulamaa of the time. Even if he purchased clothing for his family, he would purchase clothing to the same value for the ‘Ulamaa as well.
Likewise, when fruit and dates would arrive in Kufah, and he wished to purchase them for himself and his family, then he would not forget the senior ‘Ulamaa of the time. Hence, he would first purchase the fruit, dates, etc. for the ‘Ulamaa, and thereafter purchase them for his own family.

Ishaaq bin Ebrahim (rahimahullah) narrates the following incident:
On one occasion, Juwain, the neighbor of Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah), sent a platter of walnuts, raisins and figs to Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) as a gift. The value of this gift was not more than three dirhams (silver coins).
On receiving the gift, Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) handed me one dinar (gold coin) and instructed, “Go and buy sugar for ten dirhams, and dates for seven dirhams. Take it to the house of Juwain in the evening and present it to him as a gift from my side.”
Accordingly, I fulfilled the instruction of Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) and delivered the gift in the evening.

The Generosity of Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) – Part Six
Written by user2Rabee’ bin Sulaimaan (rahimahullah) reports that he heard Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) mention the following:
On one occasion, the day of eid had drawn near, but I did not have any money for my wife’s expenditure. Seeing the constrained situation that we were in, my wife said to me, “There are certain people to whom you regularly give gifts. Why do you not take a loan from some of these people?” Accordingly, I took a loan of seventy dinars. I then left twenty dinars for my wife’s expenditure and I kept aside the remaining fifty dinars for other needs.
Husain bin ‘Urwah (rahimahullah) reports:
On one occasion, when Haaroon Rasheed was proceeding for haj, he came to the blessed city of Madinah Munawwarah and sent a purse containing five hundred dinars (gold coins) to Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) as a gift.
Thereafter, when Haaroon Rasheed had completed his haj, he returned to Madinah Munawwarah. He then sent a message to Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) saying, “Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen would like Imaam Maalik to accompany him to Madinatus Salaam (Damascus).”
Ismaa‘eel bin Hammaad bin Abi Hanifah (rahimahullah) reports the following:
When Hammaad, the son of Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah), completed learning Surah Faatihah, Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) gave his son’s Ustaad five hundred dirhams as a gift.
According to another narration, Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) gave the Ustaad one thousand dirhams as a gift.
Some narrations mention that when the Ustaad received the gift, he asked, “What have I done for which Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) has sent me this gift?” When Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) heard of this, he called the Ustaad and said, “Do not consider that which you taught my son to be small or insignificant! By Allah! If we possessed more wealth at this time, we would have given it to you out of respect and honor for the Qur’aan Majeed!”

Yahya bin Hilaal Al-Warraaq mentions the following incidents which transpired at the time when he was in dire constraints and was unable to fulfill his needs:
I once came to Muhammed bin ‘Abdillah bin Numair and complained to him of my poverty. He thus took out four or five dirhams, gave them to me, and said, “This is half of all the wealth that I possess at present.” On another occasion, I went to Imaam Ahmed bin Hambal (rahimahullah) and complained of my poverty. Hearing of my plight, Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) took out four dirhams, gave them to me, and said, “This is all the wealth that I have.”
The Generosity of Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) – Part Five

On one occasion, I came to Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) and informed him that Ameer-ul-Mu’mineen, Haroon Rasheed, had conveyed salaams to him. I also informed him that Haroon Rasheed had given the instruction that he should be given five thousand dinaars (gold coins) as a gift.

Ebrahim Al-Muzani mentions, “Once, I performed haj and came to the mubaarak city of Madinah Munawwarah. While I was there, Ismaa‘eel bin Ja’far Al-Khayyaat narrated the following incident to me. He said:
I was once in a situation and I needed to know the Islamic ruling in regard to that situation. I thus went to Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) and asked him the ruling. Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) responded, “Give me some time to think over the matter.” I thus departed from Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) in the condition that I felt that Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) did not have sufficient knowledge in regard to the mas’alah I had asked. I thought to myself, “This is the man to whom people travel from far and wide to seek shar’ee rulings, yet he is unable to give me an immediate answer to my mas’alah!”
The Generosity of Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) – Part Two

On one occasion, Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) noticed that a certain person seated in his gathering was wearing clothing that was tattered and old. Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) asked this person to remain seated after the majlis (gathering) had terminated.
The man did as requested and waited after the majlis, until all the other people had dispersed. Once they were alone, Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) said to him, “Lift the musallah.” When the man lifted the musallah, he saw that there were a thousand dirhams beneath it. Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) then commanded him to take the money and said to him, “Use this money to fulfill your needs and improve your condition.”

Khalaf (rahimahullah) mentions:
On one occasion, Imaam Ahmed bin Hambal (rahimahullah) came to me in order to hear the Hadith of Abu ‘Awaanah (rahimahullah). When he came, I tried my best to make him sit on an elevated place. However, he refused and said, “I will only sit in front of you (like a student). We have been instructed to display humility before those from whom we acquire the knowledge of deen.”

The Generosity of Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) – Part Four
Written by user2Muhammed bin ‘Abdillah bin ‘Abdil Hakam (rahimahullah) narrates the following:
On one occasion, Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) came to our home. On arriving at our home, he presented his animal to me and said, “Ride this conveyance of mine.” I thus mounted the animal and rode it a little. He then said to me, “Ride it forwards and backwards (to see if you are comfortable riding it).” Accordingly, I rode it forwards and backwards, as he instructed.
Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) then said, “I feel that this animal is suitable for you. Take it, for it is a gift from me to you.”
Muhammed bin ‘Abdillah bin ‘Abdil Hakam (rahimahullah) thereafter remarked, “Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) was among the most generous of people.”
