Honouring the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat

Hazrat Aslam (rahimahullah), the slave of Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), reports that Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had nine special platters reserved for the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat (respected wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and mothers of the ummah). Whenever any delicacy, fruit or meat would come to Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), then he would make nine shares, place them on the nine platters and respectfully send them to the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat. He would first send the platters to the other Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat and would send the platter of his beloved daughter, Hazrat Hafsah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), last. At times, if there was a slight shortage in any platter, he would send this platter to his beloved daughter, Hazrat Hafasah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), and ensure that the other wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) received the full platters. In this way, he honoured the family of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) by giving them the gifts that he received from people, and he gave preference to the other wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) over his beloved daughter and family.

The Concern and Love of the Sahaabah for the Ahl-e-Bayt

The Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) were an embodiment of love and they displayed the highest degree of love for each other at every opportunity. This conduct of deep concern and love for each other was natural within them, as they regarded themselves to belong to one brotherhood of Islam. When they had fallen ill, they visited each other and saw to the welfare of one another.

Below is an incident that highlights the noble quality of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) in upholding the mubaarak sunnah of visiting the sick, and in specific, showing love to the Ahl-e-Bayt.

When the Shi‘ah speak of the relationship between Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), they paint a picture of enmity and claim that Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) hated Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). However, from the incident below, we will realize that these allegations are completely false as Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) actually had immense respect and love for Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Hazrat ‘Urwah bin Zubair (rahimahullah) reports that on one occasion, a person began to revile and speak ill of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) in the presence of Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). As soon as Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) heard what this person was saying, he rose in defense of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

The following incident depicts the extent of concern and love that Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had for the beloved uncle of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). He deeply desired that Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) embrace Islam and expressed that he would be more happy with his Islam than even his own father embracing Islam.

After the Battle of Badr was fought, Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was among those taken prisoner by the Muslims. He was captured by an Ansaari Sahaabi (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) during the battle. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had consulted the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) as to whether they should be released on ransom or be killed. A few Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) were of the opinion that they should be killed while the majority of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) felt that they should be released in exchange of some ransom. Eventually, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) decided that they should be released in exchange of ransom.

The following incident sheds light on the deep love that Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had for Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) loved Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to such an extent that he changed his intention of marrying his daughter to his nephew and instead married her to Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) once proposed to the daughter of Hazrat ‘Ali and Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma), Hazrat Ummu Kulthoom. On receiving the proposal, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) initially excused himself, explaining that he had reserved his daughters for the marriage of the sons of his brother, Hazrat Ja‘far (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) again requested him saying, “Marry her to me! By the oath of Allah, there is no person on the surface of the earth who will appreciate her nobility as I will.” Hearing this, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) agreed and married her to Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “Do not speak anything but good regarding Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and the decision that he made concerning the Qur’aan. By Allah, he took this decision concerning the Qur’aan Majeed with the consensus of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum).” (Saheeh Bukhaari #4987 and Fathul Baari vol. 9 pg. 16)

From this statement, it is clear that Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) loved Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and approved of his decision regarding the compilation of the Qur’aan. Hence, the Qur’aan which Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) believed in and recited is the very same Qur’aan which the Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa‘ah believe in and recite.

Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had great love for the Ahl-e-Bayt, the blessed family of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). The following incident sheds light on the loving relationship which they enjoyed. Similarly, it shows the sentiments of indebtedness towards Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and his mubaarak family, the Ahl-e-Bayt, in the heart of Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Hazrat Husain (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) mentions the following incident which transpired during his childhood:

Once, I came to Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) while he was seated on the mimbar, delivering a khutbah. I ascended the mimbar towards him and said, “Descend from the mimbar of my father (in some reports, “my grandfather’s mimbar”), and go to your father’s mimbar!” Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) gently and lovingly replied, “My father did not have a mimbar.” Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then picked me up and placed me at his side on the mimbar, where I sat, turning some pebbles in my hand. After he had completed delivering the khutbah, he proceeded to his home with me. He then asked me, “Who told you to come to the mimbar?” I replied, “By Allah, nobody told me.”

Hazrat ‘Ali’s (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) deep love for Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) could be gauged from the following incident. In this incident, besides Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) informing the ummah of the high and lofty position of Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), he also expressed the desire to meet Allah Ta‘ala with the actions of Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Hence, we find that Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) greatly loved Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) during his lifetime and even after his demise. He held him in the highest esteem and regarded him to be the greatest leader of this ummah after Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).

Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)’s love for Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) can be understood from the fact that he named his children after them viz. Abu Bakr bin ‘Ali and ‘Umar bin ‘Ali (rahimahumallah). (Tabaqaat ibnu Sa’d 3/14)

The Shiah claim that Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) hated Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) due to them usurping the Khilaafah from him. This claim is false and baseless as it is authentically proven that Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) loved Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) and regarded them most worthy for the Khilaafah. In fact, it is reported that Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was not pleased with any person becoming the Khalifah after the demise of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) besides Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).
