These twelve personalities presented themselves before Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and at night, in Mina, they pledged their allegiance at the hands of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) near a place named Aqabah. Hence, the name of this pledge is Bay’at-ul-Aqabah (the Pledge at Aqabah).
They pledged allegiance saying, “We will not ascribe any partner unto Allah, we will not commit theft, nor will we commit zina, nor will we kill our children, and nor will we slander anyone or make false allegations against any person.”
This was the first pledge of the Ansaar which is referred to as Bay’at-ul-Aqabah Al-Oolaa (the First Pledge at Aqabah).
As this group was returning to Madinah Munawwarah after pledging their allegiance, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) despatched Hazrat Abdullah bin Umm-e-Maktoom (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Mus’ab bin Umair (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) with them to teach the people of Madinah Munawwarah the Qur’aan Majeed and the injunctions of Islam. On arriving in Madinah Munawwarah, they were accommodated in the house of Hazrat As’ad bin Zuraarah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).
