During the days of Haj, a few pilgrims of the Khazraj tribe arrived in Makkah Mukarramah. This was in the 11th year of nubuwwah. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to them and invited them towards Islam. He also recited to them a few verses of the Qur’aan Majeed. The moment these people laid eyes on him, they recognized him (as being the Nabi of Allah Ta‘ala). Hence, addressing one another, they exclaimed, “By Allah! This is the very same Nabi of whom the Jews often speak! Take heed! It should not be that the Jews beat us to this good fortune and virtue!”
Accordingly, in this very gathering, this group embraced Islam before rising from their seats. They then addressed Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and said, “O Prophet of Allah! We have brought imaan in you. We are always at odds with the Jews. If you permit, then on returning, we will also invite them to this deen of Islam. If they also embrace Islam, due to which we begin to live in harmony with them, then nobody will be more dear to us than you.” (Rasulullah [sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) permitted them to invite the Jews to Islam.)
The six fortunate men of the Khazraj tribe who accepted Islam on this occasion were the following:
1. Hazrat As‘ad bin Zuraarah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)
2. Hazrat Awf bin Haarith (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)
3. Hazrat Raafi’ bin Maalik bin Ajlaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)
4. Hazrat Qutbah bin Aamir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)
5. Hazrat Uqbah bin Aamir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)
6. Hazrat Jaabir bin Abdillah bin Rabaab (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)
Note: Some Ulama have mentioned that the sixth Sahaabi was Hazrat Ubaadah bin Saamit (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), not Hazrat Jaabir bin Abdillah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).
These six personalities took leave from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and returned to Madinah Munawwarah. Whenever they met and sat in any gathering, they immediately began to speak about Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). As a result, not a house or gathering in Madinah Munwaarah was devoid of the mention of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
