During the period when the Banu Haashim were under boycott in the Valley of Abu Taalib, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddeeq (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) set out from Makkah Mukarramah with the intention of migrating to Abyssinia (and joining the other Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) who had made hijrah to Abyssinia).

On reaching a place named Bark-ul-Ghimaad , Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) met Ibnud Daghinah, the leader of the Qaarah clan. Ibnud Daghinah asked Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “O Abu Bakr! Where are you going to?” Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “My people have driven me out. I wish to travel in the land of Allah and worship my Rabb freely.”

Ibnud Daghinah responded, “O Abu Bakr! A man of your status and caliber should not leave this land, nor does it befit the people of your land to drive you out. You are renowned for earning and providing sustenance to those who are unable to earn for themselves, you uphold the rights of kinship, you carry the burdens of others (i.e. settling their debts and assisting them), you show hospitality to your guests and you help and assist the people (at the time of natural disasters and calamities e.g. at the time of famine and drought). I will grant you amnesty and take you into my protection. Go, and return to Makkah.”

Thereafter, Ibnud Daghinah performed tawaaf of the Holy Ka’bah in the presence of the leaders of the Quraish. After completing his tawaaf, he addressed the leaders of the Quraish and said, “A man such as Abu Bakr should not leave, nor does it behove the people to drive him out. Are you exiling a man who earns and provides sustenance to those who are unable to earn for themselves, upholds the rights of kinship, carries the burdens of others, shows hospitality to his guests and assists the people? I have granted him amnesty and taken him into my protection!”

The Quraish accepted the amnesty offered by Ibnud Daghinah, but said, “Tell Abu Bakr that he should worship Allah Ta‘ala in his home. He may perform salaah and recite the Qur’aan, but he should not do so openly. He should not perform salaah publicly and recite the Qur’aan in a loud tone as this greatly annoys us. Furthermore, we fear that our womenfolk and children should not become attracted to Islam.” Accordingly, Ibnud Daghinah informed Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) of their demands and returned home.
