Every single resident of Madinah Munawwarah cherished the deep hope and desire to host and entertain Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in his home. From every corner, fervently excited and impassioned pleas of invitation were extended to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) by the people of Madinah. Each resident implored him to come to his home saying, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! This humble home is available for your service!”
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would make dua for them and reply, “This camel is commanded from the side of Allah Ta‘ala to go where Allah Ta‘ala wants. Wherever she sits down with the decree of Allah, that is where I will stay.”
Accordingly, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) left the reins absolutely loose. He would not even nudge the animal with his blessed hand in any direction.
The environment and atmosphere was filled with such excitement and enthusiasm that in order to catch a glimpse of the beautiful countenance of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), women (and children) were climbing onto the roofs of their homes while singing the following couplets:
طلع البدر علينا من ثنيات الوداع
The 14th full moon has risen upon us
from the Valley of Wadaa.
Gratitude towards Allah is essential upon us
as long as there remains a caller to Allah.
O the one who has been sent to us (as the Messenger of Allah Ta‘ala)!
You have brought to us that (deen) which has to be adhered to.
The younger girls of Banu Najjaar were singing:
نحن جوار من بني النجار يا حبذا محمد من جار
We are the young girls of Banu Najjaar
Oh! How excellent is Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) as a neighbour!
Out of extreme delight, all from the old to the young, were exclaiming:
جاء نبي الله جاء رسول الله
The Nabi of Allah has come! The Rasul of Allah has come!
