Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam), “Who will accompany me on the journey of hijrah?” Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) replied, “Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) will accompany you.”

Hazrat Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports:

At exactly midday, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to the home of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and said, “I have been granted permission (by Allah Ta‘ala) to perform hijrah.” On hearing this, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Can this unworthy servant have the honour of accompanying you?” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Yes, certainly.” On hearing this, out of joy, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) began to weep.

Hazrat Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) says, “Before this, I never knew that anyone could cry out of happiness and joy.”

Hazrat Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) further says:

Long before this, in anticipation of the journey of hijrah, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had kept aside two camels which he had been feeding with acacia leaves for the last four months. He offered one of these camels to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying, “O Prophet of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! May my mother and father be sacrificed for you! Please choose from the two camels whichever one you like and accept it as a gift from my side!”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “No, I will not accept it without paying for it.” Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) responded, “Very well, if you wish to pay for it, and this is what is pleasing to you, then you may do so.”

In other words, it was as though Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was saying, “In all my affairs, my personal desire is of no concern to me. I want all my desires and inclinations to follow and be subject to your instructions and desires.”
