Rasulullah (sallallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) thus made the following du‘aa:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لَهُ آيَةً
O Allah! Bless him with a special sign!
Hazrat Tufail (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) says: As a result of the du‘aa of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), as I drew closer to my hometown, a light which glowed like a lamp appeared between my eyes. I made du‘aa to Allah Ta‘ala saying, “O Allah! Move this light from my face to some other place!”
The reason for me making this du‘aa is that I feared that my people would regard the light on my face to be a form of disfigurement. I did not want them to think that I had become disfigured on account of abandoning the religion of my forefathers. On making this du‘aa, the light moved to my whip, causing my whip to glow like a lantern.
The next morning, I first invited my father and then my wife to accept Islam. They cleaned their clothing, performed ghusl and then accepted Islam. I addressed my wife and said, “If you fear that some calamity may befall our children due to us abandoning the worship of idols, then I accept full responsibility.”
I thereafter invited my people, the Dows clan, to accept Islam. However, they were reluctant and wished to think over it. I thus returned to Makkah Mukarramah once again, came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and addressed him saying, “O Nabi of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! The clan of Dows has not accepted Islam, so please curse them and make du‘aa against them!”
However, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) raised his blessed hands and made du‘aa saying:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اهْدِ دَوْسًا وَائْتِ بِهِمْ
O Allah! Bless the Dows clan with guidance and bring them (to us as Muslims)
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said to Hazrat Tufail (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “Return to your people, and invite them to Islam in a soft and gentle manner.”
