On the return journey from Taa’if, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) stopped in a place named Nakhlah and spent a few days there.

During these days, while Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was engaged in performing salaah in the night, a group of seven jinn from Naseebeen passed by. While passing, they stopped, listened to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) reciting the Qur’aan Majeed, and then departed.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was completely unaware of the jinn coming and listening to him recite the Qur’aan Majeed, until the following verses of the Qur’aan Majeed were revealed:

And (recall the time) when We directed a group of jinn towards you, while they were listening to (you recite) the Qur’aan. So, when they were present for it (the recitation of the Qur'aan), they said (to each other), “Remain silent.” Then when it (the recitation) was over, they returned to their people as warners (i.e. in order to invite them to deen and warn them of the punishment of the Hereafter). They said, “O our people, we have heard a book which was sent down after Nabi Musa (‘alaihis salaam), confirming that which was sent before it, which guides to the truth and to a straight path. O our people, respond to Allah’s messenger, and believe in him, and (once you have believed in him,) Allah will forgive your sins, and He will save you from a painful punishment. The one who does not respond to Allah’s messenger (and does not believe in him) is not able to bring failure (to the plan of Allah) in the land, and he will not have any helpers and supporters against Allah. Such people are in open error." (Surah Ahqaaf v. 29-32)
