There was once a man in Kufah who would speak ill of Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) by calling him a Jew.

One day, Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) approached this man and said to him, “I have come to you with a marriage proposal.” The man asked, “Whose hand are you proposing for?” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) replied, “I am asking for your daughter’s hand, and the proposal is from a man who is noble, wealthy and a haafiz of the Qur’aan Majeed. He is generous, stands in salaah the entire night and weeps excessively due to the fear of Allah Ta‘ala.”

When the man heard this description of the person proposing, he exclaimed, “Even if the person proposing possessed only some of these virtues, I would have been content and pleased, O Abu Hanifah!” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) then said, “However, he has one fault.” The man asked, “What is it?” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) replied, “He is a Jew.”

Hearing this, the man exclaimed, “Subhaanallah! How can you suggest to me that I marry my daughter to a Jew?” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) asked him, “Are you sure that you will not do so?” The man adamantly insisted, “No!” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) then said, “When you will not marry your daughter to a Jew, then how could Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) have married two of his daughters to a Jew?”

The man immediately realized his misguidance and said, “I beg Allah Ta‘ala to forgive me and I repent to Allah Ta‘ala!”
