According to one narration, the angels had seen the chaos and bloodshed that the Jinn had previously brought about in the world. Hence, they assumed that the human being would also conduct in a similar manner.

This narration has been reported by Hazrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma). (Tafseer Ibnu Katheer 1/126)

In response to the question of the angels, enquiring regarding the wisdom and benefit behind the creation of the human being, Allah Ta‘ala replied:

اِنِّیۡۤ اَعۡلَمُ مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ﴿۳۰﴾

Indeed, I know what you do not know. (Surah Baqarah v. 30)
