عن أم سلمة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ما من أحد يلبس ثوبا ليباهي به فينظر الناس إليه لم ينظر الله إليه حتى ينزعه متى ما نزعه (مجمع الزوائد، الرقم: 8603)

Hazrat Ummu Salamah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “If any person wears an item of clothing in order to show off before people, and people then look at him (i.e. he succeeds in getting the attention that he wanted from people), then Allah Ta‘ala will not look at him with mercy until he removes the clothing, whenever it may be that he removes it (i.e. even if he only removes it after a long period, he will continue to remain deprived of Allah’s mercy for that entire period).”
