Hazrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “A believing husband should not have hatred for his believing wife. If he dislikes any quality in her, then he will be pleased with another quality in her.”

Note:

In the Qur’aan Majeed, Allah Ta‘ala addresses the men of this ummah, interceding on behalf of the women and instructing them to treat their wives with kindness and compassion. Allah Ta‘ala says:

And live with them (your wives) with kindness, for if you dislike them, then perhaps you dislike something whereas Allah places in it abundant goodness. (Surah Nisaa v. 19)

We thus see that in reality, the advice of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned in this Hadith is the same advice which Allah Ta‘ala gives to men in the Qur’aan Majeed.

Every person has certain weaknesses, but at the same time, every person also has good qualities. Hence, the husband should not fixate on one weakness in his wife and become blind to her good qualities. Instead, when he sees her weakness, he should immediately reflect on her good qualities. In this way, he will be saved from falling into the sin of ingratitude and will also enjoy a happy marriage.
