The Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat (the respected wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)) were from among the Ahl-e-Bayt of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). In the Qur’aan Majeed, Allah Ta‘ala had referred to them as the ‘Mothers of the Believers’ and the Ahl-e-Bayt of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). The Saahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) held them in the highest esteem and showed them the highest level of respect and honor. Below is an incident which demonstrates the true honor which the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) showed the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat.

Hazrat Abu Salamah (rahimahullah), the son of Hazrat ‘Abdur Rahmaan bin ‘Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), reports that Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) said:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would at times address the Azwaaj-e-Mutahharaat (radhiyallahu ‘anhunna) saying, “I am concerned about your welfare after my demise, and it is only people of great piety and generosity who will endure the responsibility of seeing to your needs.”

Hazrat ‘Abdur Rahmaan bin ‘Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was among the blessed Sahaabah who took it upon himself to look after the respected wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Hence, he had sold one of his orchards for forty thousand and thereafter gifted the entire amount to the respected wives of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), the Ummahaat-ul-Mu’mineen (mothers of the believers).

Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) then addressed Hazrat Abu Salamah (rahimahullah) and mentioned, “May Allah Ta‘ala bless your father, Hazrat ‘Abdur Rahmaan bin ‘Auf (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), to drink from the spring in Jannah named Salsabeel on account of the generosity that he showed us.”
