Hazrat Suhaib bin Sinaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – Part One
Written by user2Hazrat Suhaib (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) hailed from an area that was in the vicinity of Mowsil. His father and uncle (father’s brother) were both appointed by Chosroes as governors over Ubullah.
On one occasion, the Romans launched an attack on this area. At that time, Hazrat Suhaib (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was still a young boy. During the looting and plundering, they seized him as a captive and took him to Rome. He thus grew up in Rome, and this is the reason why he was famously known as ‘Suhaib Roomi’ (Suhaib the Roman).
Eventually, a person of the Banu Kalb tribe purchased him from the Romans and brought him to Makkah Mukarramah. After arriving in Makkah Mukarramah, ‘Abdullah bin Jad‘aan purchased him and set him free.
When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) commenced inviting towards Islam, Hazrat ‘Ammaar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Suhaib (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) both arrived at Daar-ul-Arqam at the same time and embraced Islam.

Hazrat ‘Ammaar bin Yaasir (radhiyallahu 'anhu) - Part Three
Written by user2On one occasion, Hazrat ‘Ammaar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) removed his kurta and a few people noticed black scars covering his back. When they asked him how he had received these scars, he replied, “The Quraish of Makkah would make me lie on the scorching stones of the desert. These are the scars of those injuries.”
The same torture was inflicted upon his father, Hazrat Yaasir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and his mother, Hazrat Sumayyah (radhiyallahu ‘anha).
Hazrat ‘Ammaar bin Yaasir (radhiyallahu 'anhu) - Part Two
Written by user2Hazrat ‘Ammaar bin Yaasir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had no family or tribe in Makkah Mukarramah to protect him. Hence, the Quraish subjected him to different types of punishments and tortures.
At the peak of midday, they would lay him onto the burning sand and beat him until he would fall unconscious. At times, they would plunge his head into water and suffocate him, and at times, they would force him to lie on a bed of blazing coals.
Hazrat ‘Ammaar bin Yaasir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – Part One
Written by user2Hazrat ‘Ammaar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was a man of Qahtaani decent. His father, Yaasir, came to Makkah Mukarramah in search of one of his missing brothers. His two brothers, Haarith and Maalik, also accompanied him on this journey.
Haarith and Maalik returned to Yemen while Yaasir decided to stay in Makkah Mukarramah. He then established an alliance with Abu Huzaifah Makhzoomi. Abu Huzaifah got him married to his slave woman, Sumayya bint Khayyaat, and it was from this union that Hazrat ‘Ammaar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was born.
Hazrat Bilaal bin Rabaah (radhiyallahu 'anhu) – Part Two
Written by user2One day, while Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was being tortured as normal, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) happened to pass by. Witnessing this scene, his heart filled with pity. He addressed Umayyah (the master) saying:
ألا تتقي الله في هذا المسكين حتى متى أنت
Do you not fear Allah in regard to this poor man? How much longer will you continue torturing him?
How would Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) spend wealth in the path of Allah Ta‘ala
Written by user2عن عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه أن رجلا جاء إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فسأله أن يعطيه فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ما عندي شيء ولكن ابتع علي فإذا جاءني شيء قضيته فقال عمر يا رسول الله قد أعطيته فما كلفك الله مالا تقدر عليه فكره صلى الله عليه وسلم قول عمر فقال رجل من الأنصار يا رسول الله أنفق ولا تخف من ذي العرش إقلالا فتبسم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وعرف في وجهه البشر لقول الأنصاري ثم قال بهذا أمرت (الشمائل المحمدية رقم: 338)
Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion, a needy person came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and then asked him to give him something. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “I do not have anything by me (at present to give you), but you may go and purchase something on my name (as a debt upon me). When I receive some wealth, I will settle the debt.” Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! You have already given him (prior to this, what you had possessed). Allah Ta‘ala did not make you responsible for that which you do not have ability over (on account of which you do not need to allow him to take a debt on your name).” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was not pleased with this statement (and advice) of Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Thereupon, a person from the Ansaar said, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), spend whatever you wish, and do not fear any decrease from the Lord of the ‘Arsh (Throne).” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) smiled and the happiness could be seen on his mubaarak countenance due to the statement of the Ansaari. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said, “This is exactly what I have been commanded to do (by Allah Ta‘ala).”
Hazrat Bilaal bin Rabaah (radhiyallahu 'anhu) - Part One
Written by user2Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was an Abyssinian by lineage, and was the slave of Umayyah bin Khalaf.
At midday, when the heat was at its fiercest and the boulders of the desert would become extremely hot, Umayyah would command his slaves to lay Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) down onto the burning stones of the desert. He would then place a heavy boulder onto his chest to prevent him from moving and would say, “You will die like this. If you wish to live, then reject Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and worship Laat and ‘Uzza.” However, nothing but the words ‘Ahad! Ahad!’ (Allah is One! Allah is One!) would emit from his mouth.
The more Islam continued to spread and the more the number of the Muslims grew, the more the rage and hatred of the disbelievers of Makkah increased.
As far as those Muslims are concerned who had people to protect and assist them, then the disbelievers did not have much power and control over them. However, the pitiable Muslims who were helpless and had no one to protect them became the target of the oppression and persecution of the Quraish. They would beat some of these poor Muslims and confine others to dark and narrow cages.
We will next mention a few incidents highlighting the sheer brutality and ruthlessness of the kuffaar of Makkah and the patience and endurance of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum).

The Arch Enemies of Islam - Haarith bin Qais Sahmi - Part Two
Written by user2The people who were the most active in mocking and taunting Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) were the following five; Aswad bin ‘Abd-e-Yaghooth, Waleed bin Mugheerah, Aswad bin ‘Abdil Muttalib, ‘Aas bin Waa’il and Haarith bin Qays.
On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was making tawaaf of the Baytullah when Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) appeared before him. While Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was complaining to Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) about the excessive mockery of these people, Waleed bin Mugheerah happened to pass by. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) informed Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) that this was Waleed. Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) indicated towards Waleed’s jugular vein. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked, “What have you done?” Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) replied, “You have been sufficed against Waleed.”
The Arch Enemies of Islam - Haarith bin Qais Sahmi - Part One
Written by user2Haarith bin Qais was also referred to as Haarith bin ‘Aytalah. ‘Aytalah was his mother’s name while his father’s name was Qais. He was also one of the people who would mock and taunt the Sahaabah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
He would often remark, “Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has deceived his companions by leading them to believe in life after death.” He would say:
والله ما يهلكنا إلا الدهر
By Allah! Nothing but time destroys us.

The Arch Enemies of Islam - Aswad bin ‘Abd-e-Yaghooth
Written by user2Aswad bin ‘Abd-e-Yaghooth was the cousin of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) i.e. Aswad’s father was the brother of Hazrat Aaminah, the mother of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). His family lineage is as follows: Aswad bin ‘Abd-e-Yaghooth bin Wahab bin Munaaf bin Zuhrah.
He was also one of the bitter enemies of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). When he would see the poor Muslims, he would sarcastically remark, “These are the future kings of the world who will become the heirs of Chosroe’s kingdom.” When he would see Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he would sarcastically say, “What is the matter? Has nothing descended from the heavens today? He would also make other similar remarks.

Whenever Aswad bin Muttalib and his friends would see Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and his Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), they would wink their eyes at each other and mockingly say, “These are the people who will rule the earth and seize the treasures of Caesar and Chosroe.” Making these sarcastic remarks, they would whistle and clap their hands in mockery.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) cursed Aswad in the following words, “O Allah! Make him blind (so that he is unable to wink his eyes in mockery) and destroy his son.” As a result, Aswad immediately became blind and his son was killed in the Battle of Badr.
At the time when the Quraish were making preparations for the Battle of Uhud, Aswad was ill, but he was still making an effort to incite the people against Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). He died before the Battle of Uhud.

‘Aas bin Waa’il Sahmi was the father of Hazrat ‘Amr bin ‘Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). He was also among the people who would mock and taunt the blessed personality of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
All the sons of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) passed away in infancy, during the lifetime of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Hence, ‘Aas bin Waa’il mentioned the following, taunting Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam):
إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا أَبْتَرْ لَا يَعِيْشُ لَهُ وَلَدْ
Indeed Muhammed is an Abtar. None of his sons survive.
The word Abtar refers to an animal with a severed tail. A person who is not survived by male descendants who will remember his name is like an animal with a severed tail (i.e. it is as though the person’s lineage is now severed and terminated).
Nadr bin Haarith was also one of the leaders of the Quraish. He would often travel to Persia for business. On his travels, he would purchase stories and historical accounts of the non-Arab monarchs. He would then relate these stories to the Quraish and would say to them, “Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) relates the incidents of ‘Aad and Thamud to you, but I will share with you the legends of Rustam, Asfandiyaar and the Persian monarchs.” People would enjoy listening to these tales (similar to the novels of today). Hence, they would listen to these tales and fables instead of listening the Qur’aan Majeed.
Nadr also purchased a singing slave girl and would make people listen to her melodious voice. Whenever he learnt of anyone being inclined towards Islam, he would take this slave girl to him and bid her to entertain him with food, drink and music. He would then ask him, “Is this better or that which Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) invites you to by instructing you to perform salaah, fast and wage jihaad against the enemies of Allah Ta‘ala?”
