Abu Jahal was originally known as Abul Hakam (which literally means ‘the father of wisdom’). However, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) changed this title to Abu Jahal (the father of ignorance). Abu Jahal would often boastfully say, “I am ‘Azeez and Kareem (the honoured and the leader).” Upon this, the following verses of the Qur’aan Majeed were revealed:
Indeed, the tree of Zaqqoom will be the food of the great sinner. Like boiling water, it boils within the bellies, like the boiling of scalding water. (The angels will be commanded,) “Seize him and drag him into the midst of the blazing fire. Then pour over his head the agony of boiling water. (He will be told) Taste this! You (are the one who claimed) you are the honoured, the noble”. (Surah Dukhaan v. 43-49)
