The Spread of Islam and the Quraish of Makkah Mukarramah

When the Quraish saw that Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had also embraced Islam, and with every passing day, the number of the Muslims was increasing, Abu Jahal, ‘Utbah, Shaibah, Waleed bin Mugheerah, Umayyah bin Khalaf, Aswad bin Muttalib and other leaders of the Quraish held a meeting in which they appointed ‘Utbah bin Rabee‘ah as their spokesman to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). He was a man unrivalled by any of his contemporaries in sorcery, soothsaying and poetry.

‘Utbah came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and said, “O Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! There is no doubt about your distinguished lineage and superior status, but alas you are guilty of creating disunity among the people. You speak ill of our idols and proclaim our forefathers as fools. This is why I wish to make a statement.”

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “Go ahead, Abul Waleed, I am listening.”
