Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) both left home during the night and set out for the cave of Thowr.

As Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) proceeded towards the cave, then Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), who was decreed to be his companion in the cave, and who was his devoted disciple, his dedicated companion, his sincere devotee, and his incomparable friend, was overcome with a strange sense of restlessness. Hence, at times, he would walk behind Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and sometimes in front of him. At times, he would walk on his right, and sometimes to his left.

Eventually, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked him, “O Abu Bakr! What is the matter? Why are you sometimes walking ahead of me and sometimes behind me?” Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! When I think of someone pursuing you from the back, then I walk behind you. When I think that someone may be waiting in ambush for you ahead, then I walk in front of you.”

Hearing this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked, “O Abu Bakr! Is your purpose for conducting in this manner that you may sacrifice your life for me ?” Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “Yes, O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! I take an oath by that Being who has sent you with the truth, I wish to sacrifice my life for you!” (Hearing this response, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) became extremely pleased with Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).)

Thereafter, as they arrived at the cave, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) said, “O Prophet of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! Please wait a little while so that I may enter the cave and clean it for you before you enter.”

Accordingly, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) entered the cave first, and after cleaning it, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) entered the cave.
