عن عبد الله بن عمرو قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: من صمت نجا (سنن الترمذي، الرقم: 2501)

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (radhiyallahu ‘anhuma) reports that Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The one who remains silent will be saved (from falling into problems).”

Note:

The tongue is such an organ of the body which despite being small in size, its effect and potential is very great. If a person uses his tongue correctly, by engaging in the zikr of Allah Ta‘ala, recitation of the Qur’aan Majeed, speaking the truth, upholding the truth and justice, then it will become the means for him entering Jannah.

On the contrary, if the tongue is misused, through one speaking lies, speaking to people in a hurtful manner, engaging in gheebah (backbiting), etc. then it will become the means for him being flung into jahannum.

Regarding the dynamic effect and power of the tongue, Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) mentioned in another Hadith, “Indeed, at times, a person utters a statement which pleases Allah Ta‘ala without giving it much importance, and through this statement, Allah Ta‘ala raises his ranks. Indeed, at times, a person utters a statement which displeases Allah Ta‘ala without him giving importance to it, and through this statement, he falls into Jahannum.” (Saheeh Bukhaari #6478)

Hence, if one wishes to avoid falling into the sins related to the tongue, then one should learn to control his tongue and remain silent. This will not only benefit one in his Aakhirah, but will prove beneficial in the dunya as well, as many friendships have been destroyed, relationships shattered and marriages wrecked on account of a word which was uttered in carelessness.

May Allah Ta‘ala assist us all to control our tongues – ameen.
