Upon this, the following verses were revealed:
And they say, “Why was this Qur’aan not revealed to some great man of the two cities (Makkah and Taa’if)?” Is it they who distribute the mercy of your Lord? It is We who apportioned among them their livelihood in this worldly life and We have raised some of them above others in rank so that some may employ others (in their work). And the mercy of your Lord is far better than that (wealth) which they are amassing. (In other words, the favor of the Hereafter is far superior to the favor of this world. So, if the distribution of worldly livelihood is not based on their reasoning and opinion, then how can the favor of the Hereafter (prophethood) ever be based on their opinions?) (Surah Zukhruf v. 31-32)
The point of the matter is that being blessed with prophethood is not based on wealth, worldly honour and reputation.
