Abu Lahab had three sons; ‘Utbah, Mu‘attib and ‘Utaibah. The first two embraced Islam at the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah.

As for ‘Utaibah, who had divorced the daughter of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) at the command of his father and was also rude and disrespectful to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he died on account of the curse of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

On the occasion of the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked his uncle, Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), “Where are your nephews, ‘Utbah and Mu‘attib? I haven’t seen them anywhere.” Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) replied, “O Rasul of Allah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! It seems as though they have gone into hiding.” Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Find them and bring them to me.”

After searching, Hazrat ‘Abbaas (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) found them in the plains of ‘Arafaat and brought them to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) invited them to Islam and they both immediately accepted Islam and pledged allegiance at his hands. Upon this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) remarked, “I made du‘aa to Allah Ta‘ala for these two cousins of mine. Allah Ta‘ala made them over to me.”
