Four Imaams (130)
The Authenticity of the Muwatta and the Glad Tidings of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)
Written by user2The Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) is among the reliable and authentic compilations of Hadith. It was compiled before Saheeh Bukhaari and Saheeh Muslim. It is for this reason that Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) once said, “There is no kitaab on the surface of the earth, after the kitaab of Allah Ta‘ala (the Qur’aan Majeed), which is more authentic and correct than the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah).
The Ulamaa explain that after the Saheeh Bukhaari and Saheeh Muslim were compiled and received universal acceptance, they rank higher than the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah). Nevertheless, the statement of Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) bears testimony to the esteemed and high rank of the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah).
In regard to the authenticity of the Muwatta, Imaam Abu Zur‘ah (rahimahullah) once said, “If a person has to take an oath that his wife will be divorced if the Ahaadith in the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) are not authentic, then his wife will not be divorced (as all the Ahaadith contained in the Muwatta are authentic). However, if a person has to take such an oath in regard to the Ahaadith of any other kitaab, then we will say to him that he should wait until we can investigate the authenticity of each Hadith.” (This statement was made before the compilation of Saheeh Bukhaari and Saheeh Muslim)
‘Amr bin Abi Salamah (rahimahullah) mentions, “After I read Kitaab-ul-Jaami (a certain section) in the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah), I had a dream in which I was told, ‘This is certainly the blessed speech of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).’” (Tazyeen-ul-Mamaalik pg. 90-93)
Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) was a mountain of forbearance and tolerance. He maintained his composure in every situation and always conducted in accordance to the sunnah.
Below are some of the observations and testimonies of the contemporaries of Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) in regard to his high level of tolerance and forbearance:
Yazeed bin Haaroon (rahimahullah) once praised Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) mentioning, “I never saw a person with more tolerance and forbearance than Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah).”
Yazeed bin Kummait (rahimahullah) reports the following incident:
I once observed Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) when a certain person came to him and began to insult him. The person called Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) a ‘zindeeq’ (one who is deviated). Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) remained calm and composed and gently said to the person, “May Allah Ta‘ala forgive you for what you have said. Allah Ta‘ala knows that what you have said, regarding me, is false and untrue.”
(‘Uqood-ul-Jummaan pg. 270)
Saalih bin Ahmed (rahimahullah), the son of Imaam Ahmed bin Hambal (rahimahullah), mentions the following:
When my father needed to make wudhu, he would not allow anyone to draw out water for him from the well, rather he would draw it out himself. While pulling out the bucket from the well, when his sight would fall upon the water, he would immediately praise Allah Ta‘ala saying, “Alhamdulillah.”
I asked him, “O my beloved father! What is the reason for reciting Alhamdulillah at this time?” He replied, “O my beloved son! I am thanking Allah Ta‘ala for this invaluable bounty of water. Do you not hear Allah Ta‘ala say in the Qur’aan Majeed:
قُلۡ اَرَءَیۡتُمۡ اِنۡ اَصۡبَحَ مَآؤُکُمۡ غَوۡرًا فَمَنۡ یَّاۡتِیۡکُمۡ بِمَآءٍ مَّعِیۡنٍ ﴿٪۳۰﴾
Say, “Tell me, should your water vanish into the earth, who will bring you a flowing (stream of) water?” (Surah Mulk v. 30)
(Manaaqib Imaam Ahmed libnil Jowzi pg. 382)
The Secret to Illuminating the Heart with the Understanding of Deen
Written by user2Harmalah bin Yahya (rahimahullah) reports:
I once heard Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) mention the following in regard to purifying and illuminating the heart through which it will be easy for one to understand Deen:
“The one who wishes that Allah Ta‘ala should open and illuminate his heart (with deep understanding and profound knowledge), then he should hold firmly onto the following qualities; refraining from discussing that which does not concern him, leaving out all sins and abstaining from all forms of disobedience. Furthermore, he should carry out righteous actions which should be only between him and Allah Ta‘ala (i.e. with ikhlaas and without publicizing them before anyone). When one does this, then Allah Ta‘ala will bless him with such profound ‘ilm that he will remain immersed in it and it will safeguard him from becoming involved in other occupations of the world. Similarly, he will be concerned about his end which will keep him away from all other futile pursuits (i.e. the preparation for death and the Hereafter will safeguard him from getting involved in unbeneficial actions).”

The Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) – Part Four
Written by user2When Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) completed writing his Muwatta, he was greatly concerned as to whether he had written the kitaab with ikhlaas (complete sincerity).
In order to gauge whether the kitaab was written with ikhlaas, he asked Allah Ta‘ala to show him a sign. The sign that he wished to see is that if he places the kitaab in water, and if the ink of the pages does not wash off, then this will prove as a sign that he wrote the kitaab with ikhlaas.
The Intelligence of Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) - Part Two
Written by user2There was once a man in Kufah who would speak ill of Hazrat ‘Uthmaan (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) by calling him a Jew.
One day, Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) approached this man and said to him, “I have come to you with a marriage proposal.” The man asked, “Whose hand are you proposing for?” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) replied, “I am asking for your daughter’s hand, and the proposal is from a man who is noble, wealthy and a haafiz of the Qur’aan Majeed. He is generous, stands in salaah the entire night and weeps excessively due to the fear of Allah Ta‘ala.”
Abu Bakr Marroozi (rahimahullah) reports, “Imaam Ahmed bin Hambal (rahimahullah) had great love for the poor and destitute. I did not see a poor person receiving more honour in any gathering than in the gathering of Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah).”
Abu Bakr Marroozi (rahimahullah) similarly reports:
On one occasion, Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) took the name of a certain poor person who was ill and said to me, “Go to him and ask him, ‘Tell us what food you are feeling for so that we may prepare it for you.’” Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) also handed some ‘itr to me and said, “Apply some ‘itr for him as well.”
(Manaaqib Imaam Ahmed libnil Jowzi pg. 364)
Rabee’ bin Sulaimaan (rahimahullah) reports that he once heard Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) mention the following:
The goodness of this world and the next can be found in five qualities; the contentment of the heart, refraining from causing any harm or inconvenience to the creation, earning a halaal livelihood, adorning yourself with taqwa, and placing your trust in Allah Ta‘ala in all conditions.
(Manaaqib-ush-Shaafi‘ee li-lBayhaqi vol. 2 pg. 170)
The Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) – Part Three
Written by user2Abu ‘Abdillah, Muhammed bin Ebrahim Al-Kinaani mentions:
I once asked Abu Haatim Raazi (rahimahullah), “Why is the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) named ‘Muwatta’?” He replied, “It is a kitaab which Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) prepared for people to follow (one meaning of the word Muwatta is ‘a path that is made for people to tread on’), until it became known as the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah), just as the kitaab of Imaam Sufyaan (rahimahullah) was known as ‘Jaami’ (which means comprehensive).”
‘Ali bin Ahmed Al-Khaleeji (rahimahullah) reports that he heard one of the Mashaayikh say that Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) mentioned the following, “I presented this kitaab of mine (the Muwatta) to seventy Fuqahaa from the Fuqahaa of Madinah Munawwarah, and all of them concurred with me and agreed on the knowledge that I had presented in the kitaab. Hence, I named it the Muwatta (the word Muwatta comes from the word “Waata’a” which means ‘to concur and agree’).”
(Tazyeen-un-Mamaalik pg. 89)
The Generosity of Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) – Part Three
Written by user2Yahya bin Khaalid (rahimahullah) narrates:
Once, Ebrahim bin ‘Uyainah was imprisoned on account of an outstanding debt which amounted to more than forty-thousand dirhams. Hence, some of his friends went to different people collecting funds to pay his debt and secure his release.
When they came to Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah), he enquired, “How much is his debt?” They replied, “It is more than forty-thousand dirhams.” Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) next asked, “Have you already collected money from others?” When they replied in the affirmative, Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) said, “Return whatever money you have collected to those from whom you took it. I will settle the entire debt that he is owing.”

The Caution of Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) in Issuing Fatwa
Written by user2Ahmed bin Muhammed Al-Marroozi (rahimahullah) mentions, “I posed many questions to Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah), the number of which I cannot remember, and he replied, ‘I do not know the answer.’”
Muhammed bin ‘Ubaid Al-Yamaami (rahimahullah) reports that he heard Imaam Ahmed (rahimahullah) mention, “In regard to certain masaa’il, I only arrived at a decision regarding the ruling after three years of contemplation.”
(Manaaqib Imaam Ahmed libnil Jowzi pg. 358-359)
Ebrahim Al-Muzani (rahimahullah) mentioned the following:
On one occasion, I entered the home of Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) while he was engaged in writing a kitaab. Seeing the exertion of Imaam Shaafi‘ee (rahimahullah) (and knowing that he was ill at that time), I said to him, “May Allah Ta‘ala have mercy on you! The students of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) and the students of Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) have authored many kitaabs, and they have exerted themselves in the path of knowledge more than you are exerting yourself (in other words, the effort that they made is sufficient, so you do not have to exert yourself)!”
The Muwatta of Imaam Maalik (rahimahullah) – Part Two
Written by user2Muhammed bin Rumh (rahimahullah) reports the following:
I performed haj with my father when I was still a child and had not yet reached the age of maturity. On one occasion, when we were in Madinah Munawwarah, I fell asleep in the musjid of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in the area of the raudhah, between the blessed qabr of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and the mimbar.
Shaqeeq bin Ebrahim (rahimahullah) mentions:
On one occasion, I was walking along the road with Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah), proceeding to visit a person who was sick. As we were walking, a certain person (who was on the same road) saw Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah) from afar. As he saw Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullah), he tried to hide from him and began to walk on a different road.
