The Imaan and Deen of the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) was of such a lofty level that they could not tolerate any interruption in their relationship with Allah Ta‘ala. Whenever they perceived any change within their hearts, they immediately sought remedy from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to rectify their spiritual condition. Remaining in the blessed company of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was sufficient to purify their souls and to enliven their spiritual hearts. In actual fact, on account of their purity, they did not require spiritual treatment to the extent that we require it today. Despite that, they questioned Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) regarding the finer aspects of piety and spiritual purification, and this was a mercy for the Ummah, for people who find these spiritual maladies within their hearts.

The words of the Hadith ‘pass your hand over the head of an orphan’ can be taken in the literal sense, as this action is a gesture of compassion and mercy. Similarly, it can be taken in the figurative sense which means to show compassion to him in any way. Some Muhadditheen explain that the reason for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) advising one to pass his hand over the head of an orphan is so that it will remind one of death (as the parents of the orphan have passed on) and create appreciation for the favors of Allah Ta‘ala by looking at those who are underprivileged. However, this should be done in the situation where there is no fear of fitnah and suspicion. In such situations, where there is fear of fitnah or people entertaining suspicions regarding a person (e.g. a male passing his hand over the head of a female orphan child), then one should refrain.
