11. Make khilaal of the beard. Khilaal of the beard should be made by passing wet fingers through the beard from the bottom (i.e. from beneath the chin). Khilaal is Sunnah for the one whose beard is thick and the skin beneath the hair is not visible. If the beard is thin and the skin beneath the hair is visible, then in this case, khilaal of the beard will not be made. Instead it is necessary to make the water reach the skin of the face when washing the face. [7]
عن انس بن مالك رضى الله عنه ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم كان اذا توضأ اخذ كفا من ماء فادخله تحت حنكه فخلل به لحيته وقال هكذا امرنى ربى. (ابو داود 31-1)
Hadhrat Anas (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would make wudhu, he would take a handful of water and place it under his chin to make khilaal of his beard, and Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: هكذا امرنى ربى My Rabb has commanded me to make khilaal of the beard.
12. Wash the hands including the elbows thrice. It is mustahab to commence the washing of the hands from the fingers going up to the elbows. [8]
عن عبد الله بن زيد بن عاصم المازنى ثم الانصارى انه راى رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم توضأ...ثم غسل وجهه ثلاثا و يده اليمنى ثلاثا و الاخرى ثلاثا. (مسلم 123-1)
Hadhrat Abdullah bin Zaid bin Aasim (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that he saw Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) perform wudhu...he then washed his face thrice, then his right hand thrice and then his left hand thrice
13. Make khilaal of the fingers. Khilaal will be made through passing the fingers of the left hand through the fingers of the right hand and thereafter passing the fingers of the right hand through the fingers of the left hand. [9]
عن عاصم بن لقيط بن صبرة عن ابيه رضى الله عنه قال قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اذا توضأت فخلّل الاصابع. (ترمذى 16-1)
Hadhrat Laqeet bin Samura (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: When you performing wudhu, ensure that you make khilaal of the fingers.
14. Make masah of the entire head once. The method of masah is one will take both his hands and pass them over the entire head starting from the front moving towards the back of the head. [10]
عن سلمة بن الاكوع رضى الله عنه قال رايت رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم توضأ فمسح رأسه مرة. (ابن ماجة ص 34 )
Hadhrat Salama ibnul Akwa’ (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that I saw Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) make masah of his head once during his wudhu.
15. Make masah of the ears. When making masah, one should use the index finger to make masah of the internal portion of the ear and the thumb to make masah of the external portion of the ear (behind the ear).
عن عمرو بن شعيب عن ابيه عن جده (اي عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص) قال ان رجلا اتى النبى صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال يا رسول الله كيف الطهور فدعا بماء فى إناء...ثم مسح برأسه وأدخل اصبعيه فى اذنيه و مسح بابهاميه على ظاهر اذنيه و بالسبّاحتين باطن اذنيه. (ابو داود 1/30)
Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Aas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that once a person came to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and said: O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), how should one perform wudhu? Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) requested for some water to be brought in a utensil...he thereafter made masah of his head and placed his fingers in his ears, making masah of the outer portion of the ear with his thumb and the inner portion of the ear with his index finger.
