Iyaadh bin Ghanam (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saying, “The best, most beloved and highest ranking people of my ummah – as I was informed by the Mala’-ul-A’laa (close angels) – are those people who outwardly smile on account of pondering over the infinite mercy of Allah Ta‘ala, but their hearts weep out of fear for Allah Ta‘ala’s severe punishment. Morning and evening, they remember Allah in His pure houses (i.e. the masaajid).

“With their tongues brimming with hope mingled with fear, they call unto Allah Ta‘ala, and their hearts are replete with a deep yearning to meet Him. Their burden in the eyes of others seems to be extremely light, while to themselves, their burdens are extremely heavy. They walk on the ground with humility and tranquillity, and not with arrogance and pride. They walk like ants. In other words, humility and neediness is exuded from their manner of walking.

“They recite the Holy Quraan. They are dressed in old, worn-out clothing. They are perpetually in the divine care and protection of Allah Ta‘ala. Their souls are in this world while their hearts are attached to the Hereafter. They have no concern for anything but the Hereafter. They always remain engaged in preparing for the grave and the Hereafter.”

Thereafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) recited the following verse of the Holy Quraan:

ذٰلِكَ لِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامِيْ وَخَافَ وَعِيْدِ

“This (promise of gaining the help of Allah Ta‘ala and dominance in the earth) is for the person who fears standing before Me (Allah Ta‘ala) and he fears My warning (of punishment for disobeying Allah Ta‘ala).” (Surah Ebrahim v. 14)
