The Marriage of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) – Part Thirteen
Written by user2The nikaah of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) occurred in the second year after Hijrah.
Regarding this nikaah, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had mentioned, “Indeed Allah Ta‘ala had instructed me to marry Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) to Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).”
The Marriage of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) – Part Twelve
Written by user2When Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) proposed for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), then he did so via his daughter, Hazrat ‘Aa’ishah (radhiyallahu ‘anha). Likewise, when Hazrat ‘Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) proposed for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), he sent the proposal via his daughter, Hazrat Hafsah (radhiyallahu ‘anha).
As for Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), then when he intended to propose for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), he did not have a close female relative living in the home of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) via whom he could send his proposal. Hence, he personally came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to propose for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha).
The Marriage of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) (continued)
After the proposal of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was not accepted, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) suggested to Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to propose for her.
Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) accepted the suggestion of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Hence, he went to his daughter, Hazrat Hafsah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), the respected wife of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and said, “O Hafsah! When you find the opportune time, when Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is at ease, then inform him that I propose for his daughter, Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha). Perhaps Allah Ta‘ala will bless me with her hand in marriage.”
Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was the youngest daughter of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). She was an embodiment of piety and virtue. When she reached marriageable age, there were few Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) who proposed for her hand in marriage, hoping to acquire the good fortune of being part of the blessed household of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
Among the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum), who proposed for Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), were Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).
The Hijrah of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – continued
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had escaped from the kuffaar and set out for the hijrah during the night. The following morning when Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) emerged from the home of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), the disbelievers asked him regarding the whereabouts of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) told them that he did not know.
The Hijrah of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – continued
After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) left his home, undetected by the disbelievers, the disbelievers continued to wait outside his home, thinking that he was still inside.
While they were waiting outside the home of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), a person came to them and asked, “Who are you waiting for in this place?” The disbelievers replied, “We are waiting for Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).” The man exclaimed, “May Allah make you unsuccessful! By Allah! Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has already left his home, and he has scattered sand on the head of every one of you. He has left and is going wherever he needs to go. Can you people not see what has happened to you?”
The Hijrah of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) – continued
On the night when the disbelievers intended killing Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), they surrounded his house and remained outside, waiting for him to emerge.
Initially, the disbelievers intended to climb over the wall and enter the house to assassinate Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). However, they heard a voice from within the house and thought it to be the voice of a woman. Hence, according to the custom of the Arabs at that time, they felt it disrespectful to enter the home and kill a man before his womenfolk. Thus, they decided that they would wait outside the house and kill Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) when he emerged. (Rowdh-ul-Unf 2/309)
The Hijrah of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) - continued
When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) instructed Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to spend the night in his home, then despite the fact that his life was in danger, he wholeheartedly submitted and fulfilled the instruction of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
In this manner, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was prepared to sacrifice his own life for the sake of saving the blessed life of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
The Hijrah of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) to Madinah Munawwarah
When the second pledge of ‘Aqabah took place, the Ansaar requested Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to come and live in Madinah Munawwarah, and they promised to support Islam and protect Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
It was after this pledge that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) instructed the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) to perform hijrah to Madinah Munwwarah.
Accordingly, all the Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) who were able to perform hijrah left Makkah Mukarramah and moved to Madinah Munawwarah, until only Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) remained with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in Makkah Mukarramah, apart from those weak Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum) who were unable to perform hijrah, due to being held back by the kuffaar of Makkah.
The First Youngster to Accept Islam
There are different narrations reported regarding which person was blessed to be the first to accept Islam at the blessed hand of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
According to some narrations, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was the first to accept Islam, while other narrations mention that Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was the first, and yet other narrations mention that Hazrat Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was the first to accept Islam. (Usdul Ghaabah 3/283-284)
The Ulamaa have reconciled between these narrations by explaining that Hazrat Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) was the first woman to accept Islam, and she preceded Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and everyone else in accepting Islam.
As for Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), then he was the first of the free-men to accept Islam. As far as Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) is concerned, then he was the first youngster to accept Islam. From the freed slaves, Hazrat Zaid bin Haarithah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was the first to accept Islam. (Al-Bidaayah Wan-Nihaayah 4/73)

Accepting Islam
Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) accepted Islam the day after Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) received prophethood. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was blessed with prophethood on a Monday and Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) accepted Islam on a Tuesday. (Usdul Ghaabah 3/283)
After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was blessed with prophethood, Hazrat Jibreel (‘alaihis salaam) taught Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) how to perform wudhu and salaah. After performing wudhu and two rakaats of salaah, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) returned home and taught his respected wife, Hazrat Khadeejah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), how to perform wudhu and salaah. She thus made wudhu and performed salaah with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). This was on Monday evening. During the childhood of Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), the people of Makkah Mukarramah were afflicted by a severe drought. At this time, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was greatly concerned about his beloved uncle, Abu Taalib, who had taken care of him in his childhood.

His second title was Abu Turaab (the person of sand). He was given this title by Hazrat Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) (Taareekh-ul-Khulafaa pg. 282)
Receiving the Title Abu Turaab:
It is reported that from among the different names and titles which Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was called by, the title that was most beloved to him was Abu Turaab. The reason for him loving this title the most was that he received this title from none other than Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
Hazrat Sahl bin Sa’d (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) mentions that on one occasion, Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) became upset over some issue within the home and left the home. When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) entered the home of Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha), he asked her where Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) was. Hazrat Faatimah (radhiyallahu ‘anha) mentioned that due to being upset, he had left the home.
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) sent a Sahaabi to look for him. The Sahaabi returned and informed Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) that he had found him lying down in the musjid. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) immediately went to the musjid and found Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) sleeping on the bare ground. His shawl had slipped off, due to which the sand of the ground covered a portion of his back. With great affection and love, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), with his blessed hand, began to dust the sand off his body while addressing him saying, “Stand up, O Abu Turaab (O sandy one)! Stand up, O Abu Turaab (O sandy one)!”

Written by user2The Greatest Imaan of this Ummah
In his very lifetime, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) bore testimony to the lofty and exalted position of Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). In one Hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) mentioned, “The one who has the most mercy for my ummah is Hazrat Abu Bakr (radhiyallahu ‘anhu).” (Sunan Tirmizi #3790)
