Seeratul Mustafaa (310)

After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied to ‘Utbah bin Rabee‘ah, he recited the following verses of the Qur’aan Majeed before him:

حٰمٓ ۚ﴿۱﴾ تَنۡزِیۡلٌ مِّنَ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ ۚ﴿۲﴾ کِتٰبٌ فُصِّلَتۡ اٰیٰتُہٗ قُرۡاٰنًا عَرَبِیًّا لِّقَوۡمٍ یَّعۡلَمُوۡنَ ۙ﴿۳﴾ بَشِیۡرًا وَّ نَذِیۡرًا ۚ فَاَعۡرَضَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ فَہُمۡ لَا یَسۡمَعُوۡنَ ﴿۴﴾ وَ قَالُوۡا قُلُوۡبُنَا فِیۡۤ اَکِنَّۃٍ مِّمَّا تَدۡعُوۡنَاۤ اِلَیۡہِ وَ فِیۡۤ اٰذَانِنَا وَقۡرٌ وَّ مِنۡۢ بَیۡنِنَا وَ بَیۡنِکَ حِجَابٌ فَاعۡمَلۡ اِنَّنَا عٰمِلُوۡنَ ؓ﴿۵﴾ قُلۡ اِنَّمَاۤ اَنَا بَشَرٌ مِّثۡلُکُمۡ یُوۡحٰۤی اِلَیَّ اَنَّمَاۤ اِلٰـہُکُمۡ اِلٰہٌ وَّاحِدٌ فَاسۡتَقِیۡمُوۡۤا اِلَیۡہِ وَ اسۡتَغۡفِرُوۡہُ ؕ وَ وَیۡلٌ لِّلۡمُشۡرِکِیۡنَ ۙ﴿۶﴾ الَّذِیۡنَ لَا یُؤۡتُوۡنَ الزَّکٰوۃَ وَ ہُمۡ بِالۡاٰخِرَۃِ ہُمۡ کٰفِرُوۡنَ ﴿۷﴾ اِنَّ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَہُمۡ اَجۡرٌ غَیۡرُ مَمۡنُوۡنٍ ٪﴿۸﴾ قُلۡ اَئِنَّکُمۡ لَتَکۡفُرُوۡنَ بِالَّذِیۡ خَلَقَ الۡاَرۡضَ فِیۡ یَوۡمَیۡنِ وَ تَجۡعَلُوۡنَ لَہٗۤ اَنۡدَادًا ؕ ذٰلِکَ رَبُّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ۚ﴿۹﴾ وَ جَعَلَ فِیۡہَا رَوَاسِیَ مِنۡ فَوۡقِہَا وَ بٰرَکَ فِیۡہَا وَ قَدَّرَ فِیۡہَاۤ اَقۡوَاتَہَا فِیۡۤ اَرۡبَعَۃِ اَیَّامٍ ؕ سَوَآءً لِّلسَّآئِلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۰﴾ ثُمَّ اسۡتَوٰۤی اِلَی السَّمَآءِ وَ ہِیَ دُخَانٌ فَقَالَ لَہَا وَ لِلۡاَرۡضِ ائۡتِیَا طَوۡعًا اَوۡ کَرۡہًا ؕ قَالَتَاۤ اَتَیۡنَا طَآئِعِیۡنَ ﴿۱۱﴾ فَقَضٰہُنَّ سَبۡعَ سَمٰوَاتٍ فِیۡ یَوۡمَیۡنِ وَ اَوۡحٰی فِیۡ کُلِّ سَمَآءٍ اَمۡرَہَا ؕ وَ زَیَّنَّا السَّمَآءَ الدُّنۡیَا بِمَصَابِیۡحَ ٭ۖ وَ حِفۡظًا ؕ ذٰلِکَ تَقۡدِیۡرُ الۡعَزِیۡزِ الۡعَلِیۡمِ ﴿۱۲﴾ فَاِنۡ اَعۡرَضُوۡا فَقُلۡ اَنۡذَرۡتُکُمۡ صٰعِقَۃً مِّثۡلَ صٰعِقَۃِ عَادٍ وَّ ثَمُوۡدَ ﴿ؕ۱۳﴾

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked ‘Utbah bin Rabee‘ah, “O Abul Waleed! Have you said what you wish to say?” When ‘Utbah replied in the affirmative, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “Very well, now listen to what I wish to say. I neither crave for your riches and wealth nor do I have any inclination towards your leadership and rule. I am the Rasul of Allah Ta‘ala whom He has sent to you with His divine message. He has revealed a divine book unto me and has commanded me to give you glad tidings of His reward and warnings of His punishment. I have conveyed His message to you, and as a form of good counsel and wishing good for you, I have cautioned you. If you accept this message, it will be a source of success for you in both the worlds. However, if you fail to accept this message, I am willing to exercise patience until Allah Ta‘ala passes judgment between us.”

‘Utbah bin Rabee‘ah addressed Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and said, “O nephew! Why do you have to concern yourself with these issues? If it is wealth that you desire, we will amass so much of wealth for you that even the richest man will not be able to rival you. If you wish to get married, we will get you married to whichever woman you wish and to how many women you want. If honour and leadership is what you desire, we will elect you as our leader. If you aspire to take on the reigns of government and kingship, we will appoint you as our king. If an evil spirit possesses you, we will provide the treatment to remove it.”

The Spread of Islam and the Quraish of Makkah Mukarramah

When the Quraish saw that Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had also embraced Islam, and with every passing day, the number of the Muslims was increasing, Abu Jahal, ‘Utbah, Shaibah, Waleed bin Mugheerah, Umayyah bin Khalaf, Aswad bin Muttalib and other leaders of the Quraish held a meeting in which they appointed ‘Utbah bin Rabee‘ah as their spokesman to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). He was a man unrivalled by any of his contemporaries in sorcery, soothsaying and poetry.

According to the narration of Mustadrak Haakim, when Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) appeared before Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he declared:

أشهد أنك لصادق شهادة المصدق والعارف

I give the testimony of one who has belief and knows what he is testifying to that you are definitely the true Nabi.

He then said, “O my nephew! You may proclaim your deen in public. By Allah! Even if I am offered the whole world and whatever is contained in it, I will not renounce your religion and prefer the religion of my forefathers.”

Saying this, he composed the following poetry:

According to the narration of Mustadrak Haakim, when Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) appeared before Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he declared:

أشهد أنك لصادق شهادة المصدق والعارف

When Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) returned home, shaitaan began to instil doubts in his mind telling him, “O Hamzah! You are one of the leaders of the Quraish! How could you have followed this saabi (one who abandoned the religion of his forefathers)? Why have you abandoned the religion of your forefathers? It would have been better for you to die than to do this!”

Due to the attacks of shaitaan, Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) fell into some uncertainty and doubt. Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) relates, “I then turned to Allah Ta‘ala and made the following du‘aa:

اللهم إن كان رشدا فاجعل تصديقه في قلبي وإلا فاجعل لي مما وقعت فيه مخرجا

O Allah! If this religion that I have accepted is guidance, place its conviction into the depths of my heart! If it is not guidance then make a way for me to come out of it!”

According to another narration, Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) passed the night in this state of anxiety and restlessness. He was unable to sleep for even a moment. When this anxiety persisted and did not cease, he proceeded to the haram and made the following du‘aa with utmost humility, “O Allah! Open my heart to accept the truth and remove these doubts from my heart!”

The moment Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) heard that Abu Jahal had spoken harshly to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he became enraged and set out in search of Abu Jahal.

It was the habit of Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) that on returning from a hunt, he would first visit the haram. Accordingly, he came to the haram first and saw Abu Jahal sitting there with a group of the Quraish. He went towards Abu Jahal, and the moment he reached him, he struck him on the head with his bow so severely that his head was wounded. He then reprimanded him saying, “You have the audacity to hurl abuse at Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)? I myself am a follower of his deen!”

The Islam of Hazrat Hamzah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu)

One day, while Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was passing by Mt Safaa, he happened to encounter Abu Jahal who was also passing that way. The moment his eyes fell on Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he began to revile him and curse him in the harshest of words. However, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) did not respond to Abu Jahal’s harsh words and calmly departed from the scene (as silence is the best response to a fool).

When the season of haj arrived and people from other areas and lands began coming to Makkah Mukarramah , the Quraish posted people onto the various roads and pathways to warn those who passed by of Rasululah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) by saying, “This man is a sorcerer, beware of him.” However, this strategy of the Quraish did not bring any harm to Islam. On the contrary, those coming into Makkah Mukarramah from far and wide became well acquainted with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).
