On the 12th of Ramadhaan, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) set out from Madinah Munawwarah. He was accompanied by 313 Sahaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhum).

They were so ill-equipped for this expedition that the entire group had just two horses and seventy camels. One horse belonged to Hazrat Zubair bin Awwaam (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and the other to Hazrat Miqdaad (radhiyallahu ‘anhu). Each camel was allocated to a group of two or three people.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “When going for the expedition of Badr, just one camel was allocated to a group of three people who would take turns to ride it. Abu Lubaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) were sharing one camel with Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). When it was Rasulullah’s (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) turn to walk, Abu Lubaabah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) would say, ‘O Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam)! You continue riding, we will walk instead of you!’ To this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) would reply, ‘You are neither stronger than I am in walking, nor am I more independent of the divine reward (of walking) than you are.’”

When they reached Bir Abi Inabah (which was approximately one mile out of Madinah), Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) assembled all of them for a visual inspection, and those who were underage were sent back home. On reaching a place named Rowhaa, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) appointed Hazrat Abu Lubaabah bin Abdil Munzir (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) as his deputy over Madinah Munawwarah and sent him back to Madinah Munawwarah.

There were three battle flags in this army. One was held by Hazrat Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), the second one was held by Hazrat Mus’ab bin Umair (radhiyallahu ‘anhu), and the third was held by an Ansaari Sahaabi.

As they drew close to a place named Safraa, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) sent Hazrat Basbas bin Amr Juhani (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and Hazrat Adi bin Abi Zaghbaa Juhani (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) ahead as forward scouts to spy and bring information regarding the trade caravan of Abu Sufyaan.
