Hazrat Abu Abdillah Ash’ari (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that on one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) saw a man not performing his rukoo completely, and (he also saw him) pecking the ground in his sajdah (i.e. he was placing his head on the ground and lifting it quickly like how a hen pecks the ground quickly when eating grain – in other words, the person performed his rukoo and sajdah so quickly, without ta’deel-e-arkaan i.e. without waiting in the posture until the entire body becomes calm). Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then said, “If he passes away upon this condition which he is on, he will pass away upon a way besides the way of Muhammed (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).” Thereafter, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, “The example of the one who does not perform his rukoo completely, and pecks the ground in sajdah (i.e. he places his head on the ground and lifts it quickly) is like that of a starving person who eats one or two dates. They will not benefit him in any way.”

In this Hadith, we see the great importance of not rushing in salaah, but rather performing the salaah with ta’deel-e-arkaan.

Ta’deel-e-arkaan means that when performing salaah and going into any posture (e.g. rukoo, sajdah, qaumah, etc.), then apart from doing the posture correctly, one’s body should also be at ease before proceeding to the next posture. Ta’deel-e-arkaan is waajib (obligatory) in salaah, and hence omitting ta’deel-e-arkaan causes one to become sinful and the reward of the salaah to be decreased.

It is for this reason that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) compared the one who rushes in rukoo and sajdah, and performs them without ta’deel-e-arkaan, to a starving person who eats just one or two dates. Just as one or two dates will not benefit him in any way, similarly through performing such a deficient salaah, wherein ta’deel-e-arkaan is omitted, one will not acquire the desired benefits of the salaah.
