5. Turn only the face to the right when saying حيّ على الصّلاة (hayya `alas-salaah) and to the left when saying حيّ على الفلاح (hayya `alal-falaah).

عن عون بن أبى جحيفة عن أبيه قال أتيت النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم بمكة وهو فى قبة حمراء من أدم فخرج بلال فأذن… فلما بلغ حى على الصلاة حى على الفلاح لوى عنقه يمينا وشمالا ولم يستدر (سنن أبي داود #520)

Hazrat Abu Juhaifah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “On one occasion, I came to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in Makkah Mukarramah. At that time Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was in a red colored tent made of leather. Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) came out to call the azaan…When he reached ‘hayya alas salaah’ and ‘hayya alal falaah’ he turned his face towards the right and left, and he did not turn his chest.”

عن أبي جحيفة رضي الله عنه قال رأيت بلال يؤذن ويدور ويتبع فاه هاهنا وهاهنا وإصبعاه في أذنيه (سنن الترمذي #197)

Hazrat Abu Juhaifah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports, “I had seen Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) whilst calling out the azaan, I saw him turn his face towards the right and left (when he said ‘hayya alas salaah’ and ‘hayya alala falaah’), and (I saw him call out the azaan) whilst he placed his two fingers in his ears.”

6. One should call out the azaan outside the musjid, preferably from an elevated place, in order that the voice reaches far.

عن عروة بن الزبير عن امرأة من بنى النجار قالت كان بيتى من أطول بيت حول المسجد وكان بلال يؤذن عليه الفجر فيأتى بسحر فيجلس على البيت ينظر إلى الفجر فإذا رآه تمطى ثم قال اللهم إنى أحمدك وأستعينك على قريش أن يقيموا دينك قالت ثم يؤذن قالت والله ما علمته كان تركها ليلة واحدة تعنى هذه الكلمات (سنن أبي داود #519)

Hazrat ‘Urwah bin Zubair (rahimahullah) reports that a woman from the tribe of Banu Najjaar relates: “My house was one of the highest houses around the Musjid (i.e. Musjidun Nabawi (‘alaihissalaatu was salaam)), and Hazrat Bilaal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) used to come on the roof of my house and call out the azaan of Fajr. He used to come at the time of Sehri and sit on the roof, looking at the horizon and waiting for the time of Fajr to set in. When he would see the time set in, he used to stretch (due to sitting for a long time waiting to see the time of Fajr set in) and recite the following du‘aa: ‘O Allah, I praise You (for allowing me to call out the azaan) and I seek Your assistance and help regarding the Quraish (i.e. the family of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) who had not yet embraced Islam as yet) that you bless them with the taufeeq of coming into Deen and establishing Deen.’ He would then call out the azaan. I take a qasm on the name of Allah Ta‘ala, I cannot recall a single day wherein he left out reciting these words (i.e. his du‘aa for the Quraish).”
