Sunnats and Aadaab of Wudhu

1. Sit on a raised place facing the qiblah. [1]

عن عبد خير عن علي رضي الله عنه أنه أتي بكرسي فقعد عليه ثم دعا بتور فيه ماء فكفأ على يديه ثلاثا. (نسائي 1/27)

Hadhrat Abd Khair reports that a chair was brought toHadhrat Ali (Radhiallahu Anhu). He thereafter sat on the chair (in order to demonstrate the wudhu of Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). Thereafter he requested for a utensil of water. He then commenced by pouring water on his hands thrice.

2. Make the intention for wudhu. [2]

3. Recite the masnoon duaa:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ وَ الْحَمْدُ للّٰهِ

I commence in the name of Allah Ta’ala and all praise belongs to Allah Ta’ala.

عن ابى هريرة رضى الله عنه قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم يا ابا هريرة اذا توضأت فقل بسم الله والحمد لله فان حفظتك لا تبرح تكتب لك الحسنات حتى تحدث من ذلك الوضوء. (مجمع الزوائد 1/220)

Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radiallahu anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “O Abu Hurairah. When you commence your wudhu then recite the Du’aa
بسم الله والحمد لله Through reciting this du’aa, the angels (are commanded to) continuously record good deeds for you till your wudhu breaks.

 

4. Cleanse the mouth with miswaak. Miswaak of the teeth will be made in a horizontal manner and of the tongue in a vertical manner. In the absence of a miswaak, one may use his finger as a substitute. [3]

عن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم تفضل الصلوة التى يستاك لها على الصلوة التى لا يستاك لها سبعين ضعفا. (المستدرك للحاكم 1/245)

Hadhrat Aaisha (Radiallahu Anha) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: That salaah performed with miswaak is seventy times greater than that salaah performed without miswaak.

عن أنس رضي الله عنه عن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: تجزى من السواك الأصابع (بيهقي رقم 179)

Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Using the finger will suffice in place of the miswaak (in the absence of a miswaak).”

5. Wash both the hands up to the wrists thrice.

عن حمران مولى عثمان أن عثمان بن عفان رضى الله عنه دعا بوضوء فتوضأ فغسل كفيه ثلاث مرات (مسلم 1/119)

Humraan the freed slave of Uthmaan (Radiallahu anhu) reports that Hadhrat Uthmaan (Radiallahu anhu) requested that water be brought (to demonstrate to the people how to perform wudhu). He then commenced the wudhu by washing his hands thrice.


6. Gargle the mouth thrice by taking three handfuls of water with the right hand. One should gargle thoroughly allowing the water to reach all the parts of the mouth.

وهيب عن عمرو عن أبيه شهدت عمرو بن أبي حسن سأل عبد الله بن زيد عن وضوء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فدعا بتور من ماء فتوضأ لهم وضوء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فأكفأ على يده من التور فغسل يديه ثلاثا ثم أدخل يديه في التور فمضمض واستنشق واستنثر ثلاث غرفات. (بخارى 1/31 )

Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Zaid (Radiallahu Anhu) was asked regarding the wudhu of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). He requested for a utensil of water, thereafter demonstrated before them the manner in which Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) performed wudhu. He poured water on his hands from the utensil and thereupon washed his hands (till the wrist) thrice. He then gargled his mouth and rinsed his nose thrice.

7. Place water in to the nostrils with the right hand and if there is a need to cleanse the nose, one should use the small finger of his left hand. [4]

عن ابى هريرة رضى الله عنه ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم قال اذا توضأ احدكم فليستنشق بمنخريه من الماء ثم لينتثر. (مسلم 1/124)

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: When you perform wudhu, then place water in the nose and cleanse the nose.

8. One should exercise caution when gargling the mouth and rinsing the nose while fasting, to avoid water going down the throat or nasal passage, thus causing the fast to break. [5]

عن لقيط بن سمرة رضى الله عنه قلت يا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم اخبرنى عن الوضوء قال أصبغ الوضوء وخلّل بين الاصابع و بالغ فى الاستنشاق الا ان تكون صائما. (ابو داود 31-1)

Hadhrat Laqeet bin Samura (Radiallahu Anhu) reports: I once asked Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alahi Wasallam) regarding wudhu. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: Perform a complete and perfect wudhu, ensure that you make khilaal of the fingers and rinse the nose thoroughly except in the case where you are fasting.

9. Recite the following duaa at anytime during the wudhu or after the wudhu: [6]

اَللّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِى ذ نْبِى وَوَسِّعْ لِى فِى دَارِى وَ بَارِكْ لِى فِى رِزْقِى

O Allah! Forgive my sins, make my house spacious for me and grant me blessings in my sustenance.

عن ابى موسى الاشعرى رضى الله عنه قال اتيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم بوَضوء فتوضأ فسمعته يدعو و يقول اللهم اغفر لى ذنبى ووسّع لى فى دارى و بارك لى فى رزقى فقلت يا نبى الله سمعتك تدعو بكذا و كذا قال وهل تركن من شيء . (الاذكار للامام النووى ص73 )

Hadhrat Abu Musa Ashari (Radiallahu Anhu) reports: I brought water to Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) to perform wudhu. He performed wudhu and I heard him reciting the duaa  اللهم اغفر لى ذنبى ووسّع لى فى دارى و بارك لى فى رزقى . I then asked him: O Nabi of Allah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) I heard you whilst making wudhu reciting the duaa. اللهم اغفر لى ذنبى ووسّع لى فى دارى و بارك لى فى رزقى Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam replied: Is this Duaa insufficient in any way, (in encompassing all the bounties and favours of Allah Ta’aala?)

10. Wash the face thrice. The procedure of washing the face is to take water in both hands and pass it gently over the face. The face has to be washed from the forehead to beneath the chin and from one ear lobe till the other.

عن عبد الله بن زيد بن عاصم المازنى ثم الانصارى انه راى رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم توضأ...ثم غسل وجهه ثلاثا. (مسلم 123-1)

Abdullah bin Zaid bin Aasim (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that he saw Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) perform wudhu...he then washed his face thrice


11. Make khilaal of the beard. Khilaal of the beard should be made by passing wet fingers through the beard from the bottom (i.e. from beneath the chin). Khilaal is Sunnah for the one whose beard is thick and the skin beneath the hair is not visible. If the beard is thin and the skin beneath the hair is visible, then in this case, khilaal of the beard will not be made. Instead it is necessary to make the water reach the skin of the face when washing the face. [7]

عن انس بن مالك رضى الله عنه ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم كان اذا توضأ اخذ كفا من ماء فادخله تحت حنكه فخلل به لحيته وقال هكذا امرنى ربى. (ابو داود 31-1)

Hadhrat Anas (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that when Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would make wudhu, he would take a handful of water and place it under his chin to make khilaal of his beard, and Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: هكذا امرنى ربى My Rabb has commanded me to make khilaal of the beard.

12. Wash the hands including the elbows thrice. It is mustahab to commence the washing of the hands from the fingers going up to the elbows. [8]

عن عبد الله بن زيد بن عاصم المازنى ثم الانصارى انه راى رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم توضأ...ثم غسل وجهه ثلاثا و يده اليمنى ثلاثا و الاخرى ثلاثا. (مسلم 123-1)

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Zaid bin Aasim (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that he saw Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) perform wudhu...he then washed his face thrice, then his right hand thrice and then his left hand thrice

13. Make khilaal of the fingers. Khilaal will be made through passing the fingers of the left hand through the fingers of the right hand and thereafter passing the fingers of the right hand through the fingers of the left hand. [9]

عن عاصم بن لقيط بن صبرة عن ابيه رضى الله عنه قال قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم اذا توضأت فخلّل الاصابع. (ترمذى 16-1)

Hadhrat Laqeet bin Samura (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: When you performing wudhu, ensure that you make khilaal of the fingers.

14. Make masah of the entire head once. The method of masah is one will take both his hands and pass them over the entire head starting from the front moving towards the back of the head. [10]

عن سلمة بن الاكوع رضى الله عنه قال رايت رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم توضأ فمسح رأسه مرة. (ابن ماجة ص 34 )

Hadhrat Salama ibnul Akwa’ (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that I saw Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) make masah of his head once during his wudhu.

15. Make masah of the ears. When making masah, one should use the index finger to make masah of the internal portion of the ear and the thumb to make masah of the external portion of the ear (behind the ear).

عن عمرو بن شعيب عن ابيه عن جده (اي عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص) قال ان رجلا اتى النبى صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال يا رسول الله كيف الطهور فدعا بماء فى إناء...ثم مسح برأسه وأدخل اصبعيه فى اذنيه و مسح بابهاميه على ظاهر اذنيه و بالسبّاحتين باطن اذنيه. (ابو داود 1/30)

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Aas (Radhiallahu Anhu) reports that once a person came to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and said: O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), how should one perform wudhu? Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) requested for some water to be brought in a utensil...he thereafter made masah of his head and placed his fingers in his ears, making masah of the outer portion of the ear with his thumb and the inner portion of the ear with his index finger.


16. Make masah of the nape by using the back part of the fingers. (Masah will not be made of the neck). [11]

عن ابن عمر أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال من توضأ ومسح بيديه على عنقه وقي الغل يوم القيامة. (تلخيص الحبير 1/136)

Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn Umar (Radhiallahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: "Whoever performs wudhu and makes masah over his nape, he will be saved from wearing a necklace (of fire) around his neck on the day of judgement.

17. Wash the feet including the ankles thrice. It is mustahab to commence the washing of the feet from the toes going up to the ankles. [12]

عن حمران مولى عثمان ان عثمان بن عفان رضى الله عنه دعا بوضوء فتوضأ...ثم غسل رجله اليمنى الى الكعبين ثلاث مرات ثم غسل اليسرى مثل ذلك ثم قال رايت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم توضأ نحو وضوئى هذا. (مسلم 120-1)

Humraan, the freed slave of Uthmaan (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that Uthmaan (Radiallahu Anhu) requested for some water to perform wudhu...thereafter he washed his right foot till the ankles thrice, followed by the left foot. He then mentioned: I saw Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) perform wudhu in this manner.

18. Make khilaal of the toes using the small finger of the left hand. One should commence with the small toe of the right foot and end with the small toe of the left foot. [13]

عن المستورد بن شداد رضى الله عنه قال رايت النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم اذا توضأ دلك اصابع رجليه بخنصره. (ترمذي 1/16)

Hadhrat Mustaurid bin Shaddaad (Radiallahu Anhu) reports: I saw Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) making khilaal of his toes with the small finger (of his left hand) whilst making wudhu.

19. Recite the shahaadah as well as the masnoon duaa:

أشْهَدُ أَن لَّااِلٰهَ إلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَهُ وَ أَشْهَدُ أنَّ مُحَمَّدَا عَبْدُهُ وَ رَسُولُهُ

اللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِى مِنَ التَّوَابِيْنَ وَاجْعَلْنِى مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِيْنَ

I testify that there is no deity besides Allah Ta’ala who is alone and has no partner and I testify that Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is his servant and messenger.
O Allah, include me from amongst those who repent excessively and among those who are extremely pure.

عن عمر بن الخطاب رضى الله عنه قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من توضأ فاحسن الوضوء ثم قال اشهد ان لااله الا الله وحده لا شريك له و اشهد ان محمدا عبده و رسوله اللهم اجعلنى من التوابين واجعلنى من المتطهّرين فتحت له ثمانية ابواب من الجنة يدخل من ايها شاء. (ترمذى 1/18)

Hadhrat Umar (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: Whoever performs a perfect wudhu then recites the following Duaa:

اشهد ان لااله الا الله وحده لا شريك له و اشهد ان محمدا عبده و رسوله اللهم اجعلنى من التوابين واجعلنى من المتطهّرين

The eight doors of Jannat are opened for him and he may enter from whichever door he wishes.

20. Make wudhu in sequence. [14]


21. Wash the right limbs before the left limbs.

عن عائشة رضى الله عنها قالت كان النبى صلى الله عليه و سلم يعجبه التيمن فى تنعله و ترجله و طهوره وفى شأنه كله (بخارى 1/29)

Hadhrat Aaisha (Radiallahu Anha) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) loved starting from the right when wearing his shoes, combing his hair, performing wudhu and when carrying out all other works.

22. Rub each limb thoroughly to ensure that water reaches each part of the limb. [15]

23. All the limbs should be washed one after the other without any delay in between. [16]

24. Do not speak of worldly affairs while making wudhu. [17]

25. Do not waste water while making wudhu.

عن عبد الله بن عمرو ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مر بسعد و هو يتوضأ فقال ما هذا السرف فقال أفى الوضوء إسراف قال نعم وان كنت على نهر جار. (ابن ماجة ص 34 )

Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Amr (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) passed by Hadhrat Sa’d(Radiallahu Anhu) whilst he was performing wudhu. Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) asked him: I notice water being wasted while you perform wudhu. He replied: Is there Israaf (wastage) in wudhu? Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied: Yes, even if you are performing wudhu at the bank of a flowing river (then too, be mindful of not wasting water.)


26. If any part of a limb which it’s washing is fardh in wudhu is left dry, the wudhu will be incomplete.

عن عمر بن الخطاب رضى الله عنه ان رجلا توضأ فترك موضع ظفر على قدمه فابصره النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال ارجع فأحسن وضوءك. (مسلم 125-1)

Hadhrat Umar (Radiallahu Anhu) reports that a man made wudhu and left out washing an area on his foot equivalent to a nail. Upon observing the portion that was left dry, Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to him: Go and complete your wudhu.

[6]قال النووي في الأذكار (ص73) : ترجم ابن السني لهذا الحديث باب ما يقول بين ظهرانى وضوئه وأما النسائي فأدخله في باب: ما يقول بعد فراغه من وضوئه و كلاهما محتمل.

[7]( وتخليل اللحية ) لغير المحرم بعد التثليث ويجعل ظهر كفه إلى عنقه

قال الشامي : قوله ( وتخليل اللحية ) هو تفريق شعرها من أسفل إلى فوق بحر وهو سنة عند أبي يوسف وأبو حنيفة ومحمد يفضلانه ورجح في المبسوط قول أبي يوسف كما في البرهان شرنبلالية وفي شرح المنية والأدلة ترجحه وهو الصحيح ا هـ قال في الحلية والظاهر أن هذا كله في الكثة أما الخفيفة فيجب إيصال الماء إلى ما تحتها ا هـ وجزم به الشرنبلالي في متنه قوله ( لغير المحرم ) أما المحرم فمكروه نهر قوله ( بعد التثليث ) أي تثليث غسل الوجه إمداد ... (رد المحتار 1/117)

[8](و) يسن البداءة بالغسل من (رؤوس الاصابع) فى اليدين و الرجلين لأن الله تعالى جعل المرافق والكعبين غاية الغسل فتكون منتهى الفعل كما فعله النبى صلى الله عليه و سلم. (طحطاوى ص 74)

[9]( و ) تخليل ( الأصابع ) اليدين بالتشبيك والرجلين بخنصر يده اليسرى بادئا بخنصر رجله اليمنى وهذا بعد دخول الماء خلالها فلو منضمة فرض. (الدر المختار 1/117-118)

[10]قوله ( مستوعبة ) هذا سنة أيضا كما جزم به في الفتح ثم نقل عن القنية أنه إذا داوم على ترك الاستيعاب بلا عذر يأثم قال وكأنه لظهور رغبته عن السنة قال الزيلعي وتكلموا في كفيفة المسح والأظهر أن يضع كفيه وأصابعه على مقدم رأسه ويمدهما إلى القفا على وجه يستوعب جميع الرأس ثم يمسح أذنيه بأصبعيه ا هـ وما قيل من أنه يجافي المسبحتين والإبهامين ليمسح بهما الأذنين والكفين ليمسح بهما جانبي الرأس خشية الاستعمال فقال في الفتح لا أصل له في السنة لأن الاستعمال لا يثبت قبل الانفصال والأذنان من الرأس. [11](و) يسن (مسح الرقبة) لانه صلى الله عليه وسلم توضأ و أومأ بيديه من مقدم رأسه حتى بلغ بهما اسفل عنقه من قبل قفاه و (لا) يسن مسح (الحلقوم) بل هو بدعة. (حاشية الطحطاوى ص74) الفصل الثالث في المستحبات والمذكور منها في المتون اثنان الأول التيامن وهو أن يبدأ باليد اليمنى قبل اليسرى وبالرجل اليمنى قبل اليسرى وهو فضيلة على الصحيح وليس في أعضاء الطهارة عضوان لا يستحب تقديم الأيمن منهما على الأيسر إلا الاذنان ولو لم يكن له إلا يد واحدة أو بإحدى يديه علة ولا يمكنه مسحهما معا يبدأ بالاذن اليمنى ثم باليسرى كذا في الجوهرة النيرة والثاني مسح الرقبة وهو بظهر اليدين. (الفتاوى الهندية 1/8)

[12](و) يسن البداءة بالغسل من (رؤوس الاصابع) فى اليدين و الرجلين لأن الله تعالى جعل المرافق والكعبين غاية الغسل فتكون منتهى الفعل كما فعله النبى صلى الله عليه و سلم. (طحطاوى ص74)

MASAA’IL OF WUDHU

Q: What are the faraa’idh of wudhu?

A: The faraa’idh of wudhu are as follows:

• Washing the entire face once.
• Washing the hands including the elbows once.
• Making masah of at least one quarter of the head.
• Washing the feet including the ankles.

أركان الوضوء أربعة وهى فرائضه الأول غسل الوجه...والثاني غسل يديه مع مرفقيه والثالث غسل رجليه مع كعبيه والرابع مسح ربع رأسه (نور الايضاح ص30)

Q: Which parts of the face should be washed in wudhu?

A: The entire face should be washed in wudhu i.e. from the forehead till beneath the chin and from one earlobe to the other.

و هو من مبدأ سطح جبهته الي أسفل دقنه طولا وما بين شحمتي الأذنين عرضا (تنوير الأبصار مع رد المحتار ج1 ص97)

Q: Is it necessary to wash the area between the sideburns and ears in wudhu?

A: Yes, it is necessary.

فيجب غسل المياقي و ما بين العذار والأذن (تنوير الأبصار مع رد المحتار ج1 ص97)

Q: Is it necessary for one to repeat the masah in the case where one had his hair cut after making wudhu?

A: No, it is not necessary.

(و لا يعاد الوضوء)بل ولا بل المحل(بحلق رأسه و لحيته كما لا يعاد)الغسل للمحل ولا لوضوء(بحلق شاربه و حاجبه و قلم ظفره). (الدر المختار على هامش رد المحتار ج1 ص101)

Q: Is it necessary to remove the rings and bangles when making wudhu?

A: If water reaches the area beneath the rings and bangles without removing it, it will not be necessary to remove the rings and bangles.

و في مجموع النوازل تحريك الخاتم سنة ان كان واسعا و فرض ان كان ضيقا بحيث لم يصل الماء تحته كذا في الخلاصة و هو ظاهر الرواية هكذا في المحيط (الفتاوى الهندية ج1 ص6)

Q: What is the method of making khilaal of the beard?

A: Khilaal of the beard should be made by passing the wet fingers of one hand through the beard from beneath the chin.

و كيفيته أن يدخل أصابعه فيها و يخلل من الجانب الأسفل الي فوق و هو المنقول عن شمس الأئمة الكردري رحمه الله تعالى كذا في المضمرات (الفتاوى الهندية ج1 ص9)

Q: What are the sunnats of wudhu?

A: The sunnats of wudhu are as follows:

1. Niyyat(intention)

2. Making miswaak

3. To recite tasmiyah

4. Washing the hands upto the wrists

5. To gargle the mouth

6. Putting water into the nostrils

7. Making khilaal of the beard

8. Making khilaal of the fingers and toes

9. To wash each limb thrice

10. To make masah of the entire head

Q: Is it necessary to remove the ointment from the wounds or cracks on the feet or hands at the time of wudhu?

A: If passing water over the wounds or cracks will be harmful (or delay the process of healing), it will not be necessary to remove the ointment. Making masah of that limb will suffice (i.e. merely passing wet hands over the wound or crack).

و لو كان في رجله فجعل فيه الدواء يكفيه امرار الماء فوقه ولا يكفيه المسح (رد المحتار ج1 ص102)

Q: A person who part of his hand below the elbow was amputated, does he have to wash the remainder portion of his hand in wudhu?

A: He will have to wash the remainder portion of his hand including the elbow.

(قوله ولو قطع الخ) قال في البحر ولو قطعت يده أو رجله فلم يبق من المرفق والكعب شيئ سقط الغسل ولو بقي وجب (رد المحتار ج1 ص102)

Q: Is it necessary to take new water for making masah of the head?

A: It is not necessary.

ولو كان في كفه بلل فمسح به أجزأه سواء كان أخذ الماء من الأناء أو غسل ذراعيه وبقي بلل في كفه هو الصحيح (الفتاوى الهندية ج1 ص7)
