Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports the following:

On one occasion, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) came to visit me while I was ill. When Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) entered, he heard me making the following du‘aa, “O Allah! If the stipulated time of my death has come, then grant me relief from this illness through taking my life. If the stipulated time of my death has not come, then cure me from this illness. If this sickness is a test from You, then bless me with the ability to observe sabr (patience).”

Hearing this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) asked me, “What du‘aa have you made?” I thus repeated the words of the du‘aa for Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam).

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) then passed his blessed hand over my body and made du‘aa for me saying, “O Allah! Cure him from this illness!”

Hazrat ‘Ali (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) then mentioned, “On account of the blessed du‘aa of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), I never again suffered from that illness.”

(Musnad Ahmed #1057)
